Ammonia smell in nostrils?

This has turned up again after being gone for ages! I have it after I've been working out sometimes, but now I have it all the time. No-one else can smell it, just me.

I googled and apparently some other people have this when they have been working out, irrespective of carb/protein intake.

Anyone else suffer the same problem?

Cheers
Ashleigh

it's not from your breath is it? If so you might need to get your kidneys checked out
  • I get this like 80% of the time I workout. It's never during, only after...and about 5-10min after. Lasts for probably 3-5 minutes. My urine doesn't smell like ammonia nor does my sweat itself and I never taste or smell it. Only until right after the workout and it's just a smell in my nose.

I've read this same thing about it's your body using protein for fuel and you need more carbs. Well, I don't really think that's the case for me. I eat enough carbs, probably too much and I've gotten it even after I've had plenty to eat AND it's not after some 10 mile run...it's after moderate 30min biking session. Most everywhere on the net says it only happens after very vigorous exercise or if you're really low on carbs and it's eating off protein or your muscle.

Something I've never seen brought up is perhaps chemicals that may be mixing with your sweat causing the smell. First thing that came to mind is I use acne medication on my face. So I tried it tonight. I completely washed my face with soap and even cleaned on the inside of my nostril a little to get off any of the acne medication on my face before I worked out. I just got done and I have no smell of ammonia. Seems promising. I'm going to keep trying it and see if the smell never comes back, then try exercising again with the acne medication still on my face and see if the smell comes back. Not conclusive yet, but worth mentioning I guess.

Oh, and I have heard several people say they notice it when they get in the shower and soaping up after...maybe it's their sweat mixing with their bodywash or shampoo causing the smell?
