Is it necessary to do exercise on a regular basis to lose weight. I know it obviously helps but can you still lose if not doing a major workout everyday

yes..but eventually you'll stall. as we all do unless we constantly switch things up.
its hard to do on diet alone.0 -
Yes of course. Its just gonna take you that much longer and you dont shape the body so worst case scenario, you still look fat when youve last all your weight because underneath there was nothing but skinny fat.0

Yes I lost 40 lbs in 4 months without doing any exercise other than walking 30 mins every other day. and keeping it off still!0

Yes, initially, but exercise helps to speed the process along, and it also allows you to tone and alter your body composition (assuming that you mix cardio and weight lifting). I would not forgo working out; not only does it feel amazing to finish a good workout, but it's heart-healthy and helps you reach your goal faster when paired with proper nutrition0

I beg to differ, 30 mins walking every other day IS exercise, and so is belly dancing which you say you do on a regular picture. You also have a picture of yourself doing surf boarding which is a full body work out. So whether you realise it or not you exercise on a regular basis you just dont nessercarily do it in a gym.....but to tell someone you lost that while not exercising when clearly you are!
And to some people 30 mins walking a day IS more exercise then they are doing now, and could be a daunting task to some...
But yes exercise AND diet is the only way to go to maintain because eventually after you get past 20-25 or if you have had kids, you need to keep and gain muscle mass or you lose it each year and thats what keeps our metabolism humming along with little and oftem meals.0 -

You dont consider belly dancing exercise? I am asking a serious question, I really do not know if it is or not....0 -

Agree with this :] If you choose to do any sort of exercise choose strength training! It is the most important :] Builds/maintains muscle, gives you a tone look when your body fat is lower, and keeps your metabolism running!0 -
A few years ago I managed to lose over 3 stone in about 18 months without doing any exercise and just dieting, however I have since managed to put almost all of it back on and would recommend getting regualr exercise into your daily routine. As most other people have said it will help shift the weight quicker and help you maintain the weightloss once you are there. Good luck!0

It should be about health as well as weight. Whilst you will initially lose weight without exercise you will inevitably plateau.
Exercise increases your metabolism and help flush out toxins.
Exercise does not have to be going to a gym. As others have mentioned, walking, swimming, dancing etc are all forms of exercise.0 -
exercise is essential for overall health and wellness. anyone can lose weight by cutting calories, but if you want your body to change in a positive way and burn calories, you have to exercise. losing weight without exercise is a long process. even the "Jenny Craig" and "Weight Watchers" spokespeople exercise, they just don't tell you that they do.0

Yes, you can! However, you will be healthier overall by including exercise.... Finding something that you enjoy and will stick to it the key.0

I'm just going to reiterate everything everyone else said with a few qualifiers.
Weight loss is a matter of simple mathematics, though it doesn't seem that way when you're trying to do it. Instead it seems like you're pushing a mountain along the beach. But the simple formula is Calories In < Calories Out, you lose weight. If you eat 2000 calories a day, burn 2100 calories a day, you lose. If you eat 2000 calories a day and burn 1900 calories, you gain, that simple.
That being said, it's easier to cut 500 calories a day from a diet than it is to do 500 calories worth of exercise.
Now, here's the catch, the more muscle you have as opposed to fat, the more calories you burn in your daily life. If you replace 1 pound of fat with 1 pound of muscle through exercise, you burn an addition 30 - 35 calories a day if you're a man, a little less if you're a woman.
The quick answer is yes, but exercise is the super charger to any diet. You will lose weight with a diet, you'll melt weight with a diet and exercise.0 -
Exercise goes a long way in making sure the weight you lose is fat and not muscle.0

You can lose weight without exercise, but the percentage of that weightloss represented by lean mass (ie muscle) instead of fat is higher for those who don't exercise than those who do. You will lose lean mass during a calorie deficit no matter what, but the exercises that you do will decrease this. So for me, with cardio and weight training I lost about 12% lean mass for every pound of weight loss, earlier in my weight loss I lost about 20% lean mass for every pound of weight loss with just cardio, from what I understand without any exercise this %age is even higher.0
