Mirena coil users - weight loss/gain after removal

I suspect that this wont be an issue, but I was wondering if anyone had any noticeable changes to their weight or weight loss progress after having a mirena coil removed? Probably having it taken out in the next few months and want to be prepared!

It's an IUS, rather than an IUD, and is a small coil with targeted hormone delivery.

Thanks all.

Never heard of a Mirena coil. I've heard of plain ole Mirena!

It's a type of contraception, but instead of acting as a physical barrier like the original coils do, it's much smaller and release hormones to prevent egg release instead, and also partially acts as a barrier to implantation, but not much.

Can I just ask if you have been happy with it etc? I am supposed to be getting one in the next month or so - and would like to know all about them.

I love it! Not had a period for 4 years - what's not to like about that! I didn't get any side effects apart from a bit of cramping for the first day or two. Hurt a bit being put in but it's very very quick (I've not had any kids so not sure if that's why it hurt me).

I don't remember a significant increase/decrease in weight at the time but I do remember feeling really good and back to my normal self. I think it was giving me mood swings big time!

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

cheers - guess I'll find out!
  • I have the same thing. I am wondering if part of my weight gain is from using it. I am having it taken out in a month and don't plan on using any form of bcp's from now on. I'm sick of the extra hormones.

I had Mirena in for 2 years, but not the coil. I'm assuming the regular one is the same hormones? Anyway, I had a hard time losing weight when I had it in, and I lost 20 lbs in the first 3 months after it was removed without changing my diet or exercise. It could've been the Mirena or it could be that I started taking Yasmin at the same time, maybe a combination of both. The only 'side effect' I remember from having it taken out was that my first period was really really bad. After that one though, they went back to normal.

I've had two now. 10 years with no periods, bliss. One thing I would say is that they hurt a litlle when being taken out to be replaced. My GP advised taking ibuprofen (for those who are not allergic to it) an hour before the appointment. Had very little trouble with weight gain due to it. Definately recommend it.

I think there is only one type. Calling it a coil was probably the wrong terminology sorry.
