i'm just wondering if anyone knows more about this and if it's not effective, what is a more effective method of exercising within the home besides videos?

I used to do spin classes all the time and burn a ton of calories and build cardiovascular endurance
  • I ride the bike every morning for an hour, it works mainly the lower half of the body. I have not "knock on wood" hit a bottom with the bike yet.

I find that after about 15-25 min HIIT on the stationary cycle I am beat. I love the cycle (for when I choose to do cardio, which isn't very often).

I love my bike! Without it I would not have lost the over 100lbs that I have so far. I increase the resistance every so often so I am always working hard when I do it. I do my stationary bike every morning for 90 minutes and love the results I am getting.

Exercise bikes are great for building leg muscle and burning calories. Not so great for building upper body strength. You might want to add some pushups or dumbells to keep your upper body firm.
  • I lothe cardio but I can do the exercise bike, you can usually change the setting to get as hard or as relaxing of a workout as you choose. The ones at my gym have the arm things like the elipticals so you can work your arms to. I still would take a bicycle over all that anyways, if only for the fresh air and scenery alone. Something to note, cardio machines that don't factor in your weight can give you unaccurate results I notice that my HRM can say up to 100 calories difference, MFP in general has a bad system for imputting exercise.

Hi RachelBlueGirl, congrats on 100lbs and it is great to hear that we can have success on a stationary bike. I have a problem with my right foot and the bike is the only thing that does not make it hurt worse.

Thank you docsharp! I also do some walking in the evenings, but overall, the bike is what has literally saved my life. I hope my experience can help anyone else who is unsure of the benefits of using a stationary bike.
