Food at work

So at my job they always have food events where they have free food. Well I don't have a lot of money but now that I am watching my calories I can't eat the free food anymore. It kind of sucks because it's free but unhealthy, or sometimes it could be healthy but one meal could really mess up my calorie intake. I took some food home today which were sandwiches and it had other things as well but I ended up throwing it away because it would really mess with my calories. I know that's bad wasting food because trust me I hate nothing more then wasting. What should I do about this situation I mean how would yall handle passing up free food even though you dont have a lot of money? I passed up cake yesterday, I was so proud of myself... My coworkers can really push me to want to eat bad....

Working in a hospital we have drug reps coming in all the time and they always bring donuts and cake and sugary crap. I started discretely asking them to bring better food choices! Like veggie trays, fruit trays stuff like that! Might not get it but doesn't hurt to ask.
  • I can't believe you just asked this. So, funny. I just wrote a blog post on it. Not sure if any of these techniques will help you. It's not all inclusive. =] http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/lanaholt/view/free-food-is-not-really-free-don-t-sabotage-your-diet-147643

Tell your event organisers that you have special dietary requirements and tell them what you want or don't want made available. I did this for a work event that is on tonight and when I was shown the menu, I found there were no protein options that I could eat. I discussed this with the organiser and she was able to change one menu item so that I could have dinner with everyone else.

I've gotten pretty good at taking just something small instead of filling up a plate. Let's me feel like I'm partaking without messing up my calories. There was a really nice breakfast spread at work last week, and I took just one mini cinnamon roll. It was totally satisfying, and it was only 60 calories. I was also sure to eat my own low-cal breakfast at home that morning so that I wouldn't be starving and overdo it on the free stuff ;)
  • Have you ever heard of the company called Swiss Colony? They sell candy and cheese...I worked there for a few years...At the time I decided I wanted to be thin...so they would have free cheese, bon bons, dobosh torte...just everything yummy you can think of...I just said I dont need it and don't want it...so I stayed away from where they were putting it at and focused on me and what I want! You should take your food to work with you, and have a little thing called will power! It is a life change, so you never will be wanting to eat the bad stuff on a daily basis!! Don't think of it as free food...think of it as you are going to have to pay more money for bigger pants!! That will put it in perspective a little!!!
Good luck, and tell your co workers you are choosing a healthy lifestyle and they will support you!!!

I asked the same request at my work, and they ignored me because everybody else what putting what kind of donuts they wanted...I tried to preach to them, but they always ask me...how are you losing so much weight...ummm well I'm not requesting donut flavors on the board...i'm requesting fresh fruit!!! Hehehe
