And whatever muscles sit between the calves and the ankles hurt. I can buy that as a typical thing after running. But my back just beneath my shoulder blades? Is that normal?

Make sure you are standing straight and have proper support if you wear a sports bra.

It might be your posture while running, make sure you're looking ahead not down. I'd also suggest going to a running shoe store and having your gait checked, make sure you don't need to correct it or wear special shoes.

Be careful the pain between your ankle and calf could be Achilles Tendonitis? Can happen easily with an increase in high impact activities like running. Try to run on trails or grass every now and then if you are running on pavement, and stretch a lot before you run.
  • Yep, Pretty normal for just starting. Working your feet up and down and side to side with ice after will help with some of the soreness. make sure you stretch twice a day along with before and after running. Shoulders shrugs as well as upright rows work well to that soreness. Again stretch out. Your arms should only go as far as your stride is, not all the way across your body.

I know this sounds daft, but try to relax while you are running. After your run make sure you stretch, especially your legs and that achilles tendon which is probably what's aching below your calf muscle. Make sure you are wearing a decent pair of running shoes that are suited to your feet, style of running etc - a good running shop should be able to advise you.

It's not unusual for your back muscles to ache after running. It is great exercise for all your core muscles, after all they are not only supporting your spine, but supporting your spine whilst running! Make sure you stretch out these muscles afterwards and you should be fine. If your shoulders are tense that will contribute to back aches, it will also take more energy to run if you are too tense. If you are getting actual pain rather than muscle soreness you may want to check with a doctor or sports physio if it's no better after a couple of days.

Well done for starting the running
