2 hours of cardio most days a week is my plan. Usually I work out at the gym now for 1 - 1.5 hours anyway. I'm a college athlete and did two sports last year which would practice 2 hours a day each (alternating days).

Right now, I would like to split up the two hours by doing:
30 min of elliptical training
30 min of AMT (advanced motion training - cross between stepper and elliptical)
30 min of abs and/or legwork
30 min of AMT

The amount of calories burned should be 1000+ each day. I feel like this may be a better option for me to do because I love exercising and love going to the gym, and I have trouble maintaining a diet. I always end up either restricting too much, or I binge. This way, I don't have to limit my food as much, and can still lose weight!

Is this a good/safe plan?

  • Sounds great if you have that much time. Most people don't have 2 hours a day to devote to exercise. I wish I did.

It never hurts to check with a Dr. - but disclaimer asside. If you were just getting up off the couch and trying to do 2 hours - I would say "woah! slow down!" but if you are a college athlete who has been doing 2 hour work outs - go for it. Nothing wrong with it at all. You might want to swap out a little cardio for some strength training.

BUT with 2 hours of cardio 6 days a week, you do need to eat healthy to fuel your body. You can't go home and each chips for dinner or you will hurt yourself. And the only thing that I wonder is when your life gets busy and you can't do 2 hours of cardio - you may have to re-evaluate your plan.

Why just cardio? I think if you look through the forums, you'll find lots of examples and explanations as to why you should also think about incorporating Strength training in some form into your weekly routine. 2 hrs seems like a long time to do Cardio, 6 days a week to me. Please make sure you're fueling your body with enough calories to support such an intense workout!

Currently I get up and do around 40 minutes on the treadmill before I start my day. Then in the evening when the house is settled back down I do zumba (xbox kinect) for 20 minutes and some kind of strength training video. Want to tone while I loose all the fat. :) So far it is working.
