Lately, I have really had a hard time getting my metabolism to do its thing. I stopped smoking and started using the patch. Could the constant presence of nicotine in my system be causing my metabolism to go haywire? Suggestions?

  • Bump. I'm interested to know as well. I don't smoke anymore or use anything, but I'm definitely curious.

I quit smoking in January and I gained 20 pounds between January 2nd and the beginning of June, when I started here. It most definitely messes with your metabolism because nicotine is a stimulant. In addition, I found myself eating more, for sure, when I was bored - I used to smoke when I was bored, so when I stopped smoking, I had my hand in the bag of chips. It sucks for sure, but you are much healthier for quitting smoking! I hate that I have only lost 7 of the pounds I gained, but I am going to just keep on persevering. Good luck, I know how you feel!

I just lost a dear friend to cancer. I'd say it was lung cancer, except that was just the beginning. That f****r started in the lungs and in just 2 months it was all over his organs and I was shopping for a black dress. He was literally fine and working one day and buried 2 months later!!! We haven't even started getting over it. You're doing the right thing by quitting. It's not easy, but...hang in there!

Well... according to this eHow article, the patches should actually be helping to speed up my metabolism. So why all of a sudden is it so hard for me to lose weight???

Hmm, that's true. Maybe it is just a natural plateau for you, you have lost so much weight already! Which is another accomplishment you should be so proud of.

But I'm not really plateauing. I'm just fluctuating a lot. Usually I don't have that much fluctuation except during my cycle, but I've been up and down between 5lbs for three weeks now.
