Sit ups: that's your core, plank, sit ups etc.

Upper body strength is usually referring to arms, shoulders, chest, back. I like to use free weights (dumb bells).

YOGA!!! Builds muscle strength like you wouldn't believe. PILATES too.

Situps will not build your upper body.

Pushups will though!! Do them on your knees or modified if you need to, but they are great for your whole upper body.

There are a lot of weight machines at the gym, or free weights also. See if there is a trainer there that can help you. Good luck!

Every weight machine at the gym shows you a guide as to what muscles they work... most gyms also have weight machines set up by body part... so all bicep machines should be close together, all back machines should be close together, etc etc etc.
To work the whole upper body I recommend doing sets on at least one machine that works:
    1.) Biceps
    2.) Triceps
    3.) Shoulders/Deltoids (front and rear)
    4.) Upper Back
    5.) Lower Back
    6.) Abdominals and obliques
    7.) Chest

Of course, many machines will work more than one muscle at a time, so you can cut down on workout time if you workout by muscle group.

As suggested... push-ups are a WONDERFUL total upper body workout.
For lower body, squats and lunges work wonders!
