Advice- Pulled muscles

I was going to the gym 5-6 days a week for about 1.5 hours and it finally caught up to me. I think I pulled a muscle in my butt while running ...and then went on the elliptical anyways the next day. You know, work through the pain! Not a good idea. So now it has been a month since I have done cardio because I could barely walk for 2 weeks. It still hurts to run but I can finally stand on one foot again and can walk without it hurting. So my question is, how can I get back into running? My boyfriend is telling me I should start again slowly right now, but it still hurts a bit and Im scared of messing it up again. He think I need to strengthen that muscle, not rest it. Is that true? And also, how much time does it take to heal!?! I miss running any advice would be awesome. Thanks!

Strains don't just go away over night, and how long it takes to heal depends on the severity. It it's still hurting after a month you could have a partial tear on the muscle which isn't something that will generally heal itself, or could be a torn ligament at the origin of the muscle.
If you've been trying to "work through the pain" instead of resting, you're working against yourself.
Best advice would be to get checked out by a Sports Therapist to repair any muscle damage and check the severity of the strain. Regardless, you should be icing regularly until you can stretch comfortable with your full range of motion in the muscle.
"Working through the pain" will only delay your return to activity.
Note: A Fitness forum does not replace the advice of a licenced sports physiotherapist.0
