This week I had the opportunity to see my efforts in getting more fit and healthy pay dividends in my day to day life.

I'm a professional computer geek. Earlier this week I was tasked with racking 12 new servers in one day by myself. That is just the way it worked out.

A year ago this would have left me tired and I would not have got it done anywhere near in time.

To put this in perspective for non geeks, a server is typically the size of two sheet cakes side by side and twice as thick. It will weigh anywhere from 45 to 80 pounds. We mount them in cabinets about the size of an enclosed phone booth.

Having added strength training just under two months ago to my regimen, I was pleased to find the work very manageable and it did not leave me winded. One of my coworkers was truly surprised I got it done in 3 hours.

I had enough energy left that I went square dancing that night. WooHoo.

That is so awesome. It's the little things like this that make us realize how bad we let ourselves go and see how far we've come. Good job!

For those who don't see the need for strength training, the same work is expected all sysadmins in the field irregardless of gender.
