An Interesting Observation About Walking

Okay, so now that I've been going at this for two months, I'm beginning to be able to tell exactly what pace I'm walking it, judging by distance and exertion as well. This is extremely nice, but a while ago I noticed something strange. One day I was walking at a fairly moderate pace, with intent to exercise fully. The next, I walked at a more leisurely pace. Both days I was able to reach the same location at the same amount of time (I ALWAYS use my wristwatch's timer and stop/start it at the lights, etc., so this is approximate).

My observation was that my STRIDE LENGTH had literally altered for the leisurely pace, thus resulting in the same speed but feeling much less exertion. I had not prior thought about this alternative... if you could call it that. Has anyone else experienced this? Am I being dense and oblivious or what? :P Fun stuff, on any account. Also, do you think that one method would burn more calories than the other? Even though neither make me sweat and I have to pump it up to 4 MPH now to achieve that effect.
