If you're basing this on Body Mass Index - don't base it on Body Mass Index.

BMI is not meant for use on individuals. There's no science to the idea that height squared and body weight should be proportional. The equation was actually manipulated to fit a data a particular data set for a particular demographic, there's no reasoning behind it.

On a population level it can make some predictions but even these are not powerful. It is only to be as a general guideline when extrapolated over large populations.

Additionally, weight does not increase proportionally with height so as you get taller the equation actually becomes skewed towards recommending lower weights than it should. Use body fat % as a more accurate indicator of your progress and don't worry about BMI!

Also BMI numbers assume a sedentary lifestyle. For someone active carrying more muscle they are pretty low. My BMI is at the top end of overweight for my height, but my BF is 29% which is considered healthy for a lady according to most sites (I think its a bit over the high end for healthy personally but I suppose I'm not at risk for weight related diseases at this size?)

I still like the number on the scale for myself as a good overall idea but as long as my BF is in the low 20s I won't care what the final number is when I'm there.

I'm 5,7'' and have never been a healthy weight. I want to get down to 140 and really the only reason I picked that number is because it sounds 'normal' to ME. How I carry my weight is in my belly. ALL in my belly. I see people who post here saying they wear size 12 or 14 and weigh 190 or 200 and I'm completely shocked! I wear a 14 and I'm 170! Really, I think choosing a number to aim for is just a way to have a set goal to work toward. I have no idea what I look like at a healthy weight (meaning less belly fat). I might stop at 145 and think it's suitable for me OR I might get to 140 and think there's still too much belly fat and see what else I can do to rid of it.

If you're unsure about the weight you should be take into consideration your bone frame, height and just overall look of yourself as you lose weight.

This is good advice. If you really don't know what you should weigh, just eat healthy, exercise and follow the MFP guidelines and see where you end up. Don't get so caught up in numbers on the scale or BMI chart. If you live a healthy lifestyle you'll get where you are supposed to be.
