Hi,
I just started my weight loss program on Aug 31, and I am having a really tough time staying under my sodium target. Does anyone have and recommendations for low sodium foods or even snacks? Any help would be appreciated!\

Thanks,
Steph

I stopped using canned chicken and started cooking large batches of chicken breasts in my crock pot, shredding them, and freezing them in individual baggies to use whenever. Canned meat (and lunch meats) have extremely high sodium levels. I also stay away from prepackaged meals (like Healthy Choice). Your lowest sodium foods will be things not sold in a box (i.e. fruits, veggies, and lean meats).

But if you do still plan on eating processed foods, try looking at the labels to find a lower sodium solution. As a recovering heart patient, I have to keep an eye on my sodium. So there are alternatives out there.

One thing to watch out for is some of your frozen meats like chicken. They will be high in sodium to preserve freshness. For chicken, I buy fresh unfrozen in the meat section of my store. Then take them home, vacuum pack and freeze them myself. Doing this til preserve the freshness until you have a chance to use it.

Anything in a box or can is going to be high in sodium. Opt for frozen vegetable instead of canned ones. They tend to be much lower in sodium. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. In the place of deli meats, use grilled chicken or baked chicken, shredded. Some things are just going to have sodium..like milk, bread, ketchup, etc. Just use in good judgement. I struggle with my sodium intake daily, so good luck to you!

I was pretty surprised how much sodium is in raw veggies, especially carrots and celery. Never would have guessed there was so much.

When I was getting to my sodium limit with fresh meats/veg/dairy and still not seeing enough calories, I started adding fresh fruit. Fresh fruits have much lower sodium than fresh veg.

Seems like everything's a trade off, but I guess why they call it a "balanced diet". :)

Low sodium is like the hardest thing for me! Not taste wise, but finding stuff to eat and not going over! Some days it's just plain impossible to not go past 1500, but I try to never ever go over 2000 unless its a really special occasion. Thanksgiving I'm allowing myself 2500! hehe
