Greetings as of 9/22/2011 in the am I will be starting this course of losing weight. I want to lose the weight I put on over the last 14 years. I am a retired vet of the US Army, after serving 22 years when I retired I weighed 189 lbs but then my body retired with me I currently weigh 289 , I am tired of it and want to lose, but my motivation factor is close to nil.

In April of 2009, I lost a leg in a motorcycle accident and now move and get around in a wheel chair I know this won't be easy but I am willing to try anything that anyone can recommend to me to get my physical fitness in daily. I want to lose weight and I am a avid watcher of "THE BIGGEST LOSER" and I cry when I see them lose the weight weekly and I just wish I could do the same, I just don't know what to o besides lowering my calorie count daily.

Please anyone out there that may be in a similar situation that may be able to help me please reply!

Robert

it rocks that you have been through all this and you are still ready to kick some *kitten*! props to you! i'm not experienced in this kind of thing, but i would guess that you could burn a lot of calories doing some punches. like crazy punches - maybe you could get a punching bag and just go to town. it seems like that would be something you could adjust to your seat, and it would get your heart rate up for sure. best of luck to you!

    Welcome! I'm glad you're here!

I used to love Biggest Loser, but they make me a little crazy now. I think they set up false expectations for people who are doing this the right way. I did some research, and those folks exercise up to 8 hours a day.... I mean, it's their job! They also follow calorie restrictions - it's a great recipe for quick weight loss success, but it's not feasible for the real world. (My second pet peeve is that my two favorite trainers are also now selling weight loss pills - I respected them much more when they spoke about eating well and balanced and moving)

All that aside - again, WELCOME. You have an amazing track record of service - and I know what discipline that takes. You HAVE the will to do this. You said your motivation is nil... but I challenge you to rethink that. You DO have some of the motivation, because you're here and you're posting and you're asking for support. :-) Keeping motivation going may be another challenge - most of us face that. This site helps, as does surrounding yourself with supportive people.

I would suggest you do some internet research. There are likely modified exercises you can do to help boost your metabolism. If finances permit, you may even want to look into a trainer that can design a program specifically for you. I have to admit I'm struggling to come up with cardio ideas with your injury, but I know others here will have some great ideas.

Have you tried swimming? Hand biking? Stretching or modified yoga?

Best of luck to you, Robert. You can do this!

I know several people who use chairs and the most important thing is to be as active as possible. The chair may result in you using different muscles and it will be good to talk to a physical therapist about some specific exercise recommendations but being active and involved make a huge difference in your overall health.
