SheenRoast

I know I'm getting old. The last celebrity roast I watched included guys like Joey Bishop, Don Rickles, Johnny Carson and Sammy Davis Jr.

The other night I recorded SheenRoast. Jan and I sat down to watch it 2 nights ago.

About 5 minutes into it, I turned to Jan: "I don't care if I see the end of this." Jan's reply was "Me either."

So I switched to something else, but I didn't cancel the recording. When I got home from work last night, I started it back up. I don't know under what circumstances this could be considered entertainment. I've never heard so many vile, personal attacks on people before on TV. No subject was off limits. Racist, Sexist. Attacks on family, religion, poverty. I fast forwarded through about 75% of it. Just caught a little bit of each Roaster, but, unless they revealed the secret cure for cancer during the parts I fast forwarded through, there was absolutely no reason to broadcast this.

It was on Comedy Central. Didn't see a single funny thing. It just left me uneasy to watch these people take the most vile of shots at each other.

I guess nothing is off limits if done under the guise of entertainment.

Yeah the roasts now are way different than the Dean Martin hosted roasts. They were more tasteful. The ones now make me cringe. You really have to watch them knowing they are going to take the most sensitive part of their lives and make the worst joke possible out of it. I was excited to watch it but then I just sat there cringing the entire time.

    I didn't watch it, nor would I.
Not sure why we're paying any extra attention to a man who has real issues that need to be addressed.

He's a very sick man and it's almost as if the country has told him it's ok, because he get's more attention now than he did when he was on that sitcom.
  • the Dean Martin Roasts were the best. i didn't bother watching the Sheen one, and some of the more recent roasts, there may be one or two chuckles, but, not drop off the counch laughing your pants off like they used to be.
    *sigh*

*edit* apparently i can't spell couch :ohwell:

It sure has changed since Dean Martin did the Celebrity roast but so has everything else.
I bet our parents thought the Dean Martin roasts were outrageous at the time.
It's just a sign of the times, weather we like it or not. I don't think it is going to change. It will just keep getting worse and worse. Although I can't imagine. :flowerforyou:

Ehn. If you'd seen any of the other recent roasts, you'd know Sheen's is actually pretty tame, all things considered.

Well I'm a sick individual then because I loved it. I think some people are way too uptight these days, but that's just me. There's far greater issues in the world than a Roast of a drug addict. If that takes my mind off those issues for awhile then it's called entertainment.

I realize there is a market for it or they wouldn't be around.

I agree that he is a sick drug addict. The worst of the comments, though, weren't even on Charlie Sheen. They were directed at the other members of the panel.

I don't believe in censorship, as long as a crime is not being committed, so, enjoy. I'm not a prude, nor am I particulartly sensitive, but I will exercise my right to boycott such entertainment in the future.

People have just gotten mean, ugly, nasty, bitter and rude.
Honestly if I had half the money they had I could think of more constructive things to do rather than be a repulsive bitter POS.
    But that's just me.

You need to remember, these jokes are written for entertainment. Do you actually believe anyone would actually be racist towards Tyson and actually mean it? These roasts are all in fun. They probably all went for drinks and laughed afterwards.

Didn't care to watch it. Just because the intended person of the joke isn't offended, doesn't make it right. Some topics are just "off limits" to me in regards to jokes (racism, sexism, sexual orientation, physical abuse...just to name a few). We've worked hard in this country for social justice (and some are still fighting) for us to accept this kind of humor. I'm with you, RoadDog.

Sick sense of humor here too. Charlie Sheen's was okay, David Hasselhoff's was crazy funny.

Oh he totally did. But then again, he's not a comedian. That'd be like trying to make Jeffrey Ross sing the National Anthem. It just doesn't go together.
