Organic or not Organic? That is the question

It is amazing how the shift to organic eating has taken over ad nauseam. Now you can have anything that's "organic." Cheetos, snickers, ice cream you name it you can get it. I eat organic food, love it, feel better when eating it and recommend to you all. However, I find in the health and fitness world the practice of taking the simple and going overboard. When I was about 45 lbs heavier I would say to myself well these cookies are organic and end up eating a whole package. This word has become the subtle killer because no one wants herbicides and pesticides and all the other ides in their food (I don't either). But switching to eating 5 organic hamburgers at one sitting instead of 5 non-organic hamburgers is not much better, the fact is it's still 5 hamburgers instead of just one. So my point is to be balanced with all the information we have at our fingertips, especially when it comes to living a healthy life. Enjoy!

That's right! Organic doesn't make it healthier! It just makes it not all full of pesticides and nasty stuff. Crazy how people think it's okay to eat more of something just because it is organic.
  • I like what you're saying a lot. Just because it doesn't have chemicals in it, doesn't mean that you aren't going to get larger from going overboard.

Organic food still has fats and sugars in it that your body doesn't need. Honestly, my struggle has always been with portions... So, whether or not your food is organic, you still need to eat all types of food in moderation.

I am opting for Locally grown meats, dairy and produce over organic. I am fortunate that my CSA is both local and organic.

I try my hardest not to eat any packaged or processed foods so when I go down the "health food" aisle at the grocery store, I kind of roll my eyes at organic cookies and such..............junk food is still junk food no matter the package.

Yeah, organic isn't mean healthy. It's just produced differently.

That being said, if you live on the East Coast and buy organic stuff from the West Coast, you might as well just buy the regular stuff.

I've bought organic and non-organic food.

    All I've discovered is:

    1) Organic spoils faster,

    2) Costs a lot more

    3) Tastes the same to me.

IMO organic is just another way to get more money from people who buy into the scaremongering.

    My point exactly.

If that is supposed to be horrifying, with all the real horror out there, people need to get out more... :ohwell:

But there are some products where 'organic' makes a big difference. Making a switch ot organic milk and meat five years ago (which my pediatrician recommended to my parents) helped save my body: my horrible hormone imbalances straightened out within a year, my depression went away, and my skin got a lot better. Obviously being in my teens at this time was a big factor, too, but I truly believe that this particular 'organic' label is a really important thing to spend the extra money on! :]

I totally agree with this. The nutrition in organic junk food is the same as in conventional junk food! Junk food is still junk food! I eat organic meat and dairy and in my opinion I find it much more flavorful. For that reason, I think it is worth the extra money spent.
  • i try and buy organic when i can. it helps balance your hormone levels which can cause you gain weight and those trying to lose weight could have a hard time doing so. do i buy everything organic? no. but id rather not put all of those hormones and pesticides in my body. but to each their own :)

i try to buy organic or natural whenever possible. Basically "clean" eating. No fake ingrediants. I do follow the "Clean 15" or "dirty dozen" when buying produce: http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/
When I really started looking at contents of prepackaged and processed food I was horrified!! I think most "kids" foods are shameful and sickening!!
