Target Heart Rate and going over?

I have a Polar FT4 which I just LOVE! I wear it every time I exercise. I love pushing myself to meet or beat my calories burned on certain exercise routines.
I have noticed that lately I have been going above my target heart rate range according to my FT4. I am dong my usual workout, but I do have a cold. When I do these workouts with out a cold, I go over but only like once or twice and not for long. But this week I go over and stay over for longer and more often.
Is this good? Is it bad? Do I need to not push as hard? Or have I turned my usual workout into a modified interval workout? I'm wondering if my work out is more effective or less effective when I go above my target HR. I'm not sure I can change that range or if I even should if I can. What are your feelings on this? Thanks!
