Well looks like another possible EPIC beyond Epic fail on sciences part, everything we know about physics could be about to get thrown out the window as they have found out that Light might not be the fastest thing in our known universe, which means Einsteins theory of relativity is out the window LMFAO! Go science

anyone interested in the details basically science has taught and thought for years that nothing can move faster than light in a vacuum because it has no mass, recently CERN has released information that they are looking at neutrinos which do have mass and can travel faster than light speed, they haven't made it mass knowledge yet because they want America and Japan to confirm there findings first, because well basically it will change everything man has ever known about and understood of physics, cause and effect... the list goes on

  • Pretty admirable that scientists are able to recast fundamental ways in which they conceive of how things work when presented with evidence that may contradict previously held beliefs.

    The greatest thing about science is that it adapts to change and new data. I am just not looking forward to having to relearn physics. :P lol

    Yeah, I read that article yesterday and had a good laugh at science's expense. The data is still being scrutinized though. And some other team has to duplicate the results.

    The elegantly simple expression of the relationship between energy and mass is E=MC^2
    E= energy
    M= mass
    C= constant

    A stationary object is moving at the atomic level.

    Cynics would say it's just physicists trying to get another research grant :wink:
    We always knew there was stuff we didn't know but I find it a little scary to think that a great deal of what I learned and understood at university may be completely wrong at worst; incomplete at best. Oh well, I like a challenge in life and it's definitely and interesting development.

    Now if only these scientist could find the secret to eliminating thunder thighs :bigsmile:

    I think it's great that they review the findings before coming to conclusions. If only the FDA and USDA did the same.

    I don't understand why everyone is laughing at Science? This is amazing, and totally not surprising that there is info out there that goes against what we believe. Look at history - that happens all the time - the world being flat is a huge example. Why would we be so arrogant as to think we know it all already?

    Not so fast there. This is only one non-peer reviewed experiment.... there's been plenty of evidence to the contrary, that neutrinos do not exceed the speed of light. Previous measurements of neutrino speed across many light years have aligned perfectly with the predictions that it would be not exceed the speed of light.... specifically the 1987a supernova event. If this experimental data were true, the neutrinos would have arrived 4 years earlier than the light from this supernova, which did NOT happen.

    There will be plenty more to this story... so lets not throw out 2000 years of discovery just yet, mmkay?

    By the way... there's no such thing as "fail" in science... that phrase alone shows you obviously have no idea how science works. The only fail, is when someone make something up that has absolutely no evidence, and causes people everywhere to believe it.

    Exactly!

    The only ones who think they have it all figured out are religi...

    I havent had a chance to read this article yet, gonna at lunch, but the thing is, remember everything in science is only a theory. We build our beliefs ontop of one another, to get a better understanding. Thats why there is no such thing as the law of gravity, only the theory.

    I agree. Unless there have been other duplicated studies come to the same conclusion, then you can't discount the current theory.
    But I love science. I live by it and am a person who likes to see evidence, have it refuted, and then decide what the truth may be.

    IF no one ever pushed the boundaries of our beliefs, and no one ever questioned theories that were put out there, we would not have what we have today. It's foolish and silly and petty and a bit bigoted to think that we know everything there is to know about the world and the universe and all that exists.

    I'm not a huge science person, but I enjoy it. I find physics to be fascinating, albeit incredibly confusing :laugh:

    This. The "fail" would be if scientists, upon getting results that current understanding or their hypothesis cannot explain, proceed to bury the results.

    ok to all the haters, I was merely pointing out that what science has claim to be the foundation of physics is possibly going to be out the window, that imo is a fail considering the amount of hype around it. Lesson for today don't take things at face value and presume because I create a post expressing my opinion your better than me. usual trolls out and about I see.

    Yes I do believe there is more to it, but I find it highly amusing that what has been common practice for years is possibly about to be found out to be wrong. Hence Epic Fail!

    I am a college science instructor. I will remain mum on which science as it doesn't really matter. This is a question from the first exam I give in every class I have ever taught. Let's see how my fellow MFPers do.

    Which of the following statements about the scientific method is NOT true?
    A. Science proves nothing
    B. Scientific theories and laws always hold true
    C. The first step in the scientific method is to make observations
    D. Hypotheses are based on data
    E. Theories that we have been unable to disprove are called laws

    I'll give you a hint, answer A is absolutely correct and the question is asking for the statement that is false.

    OP - while I understand your intent and realise you were not trying to be overly offensive. As a scientist, I find the idea that science can ever "fail" very offensive and I agree that your comments show your lack of understanding of what science is.

    BEDEVERE: And that, my lord, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped.

    ARTHUR: This new learning amazes me, Sir Bedevere. Explain again how sheep's bladders may be employed to prevent earthquakes.

    BEDEVERE: OF course, my Liege ...
