Women: Salon or at home hair color??

I dye my hair at home all the time. Latey I've been using the foam kind by John Freeda because it is easy to do by yourself and the colors are pretty. The only reason I'd go get my hair done at a salon is for highlights/lowlights.0

Hi Sexy Ladies!! Do you think its worth it to use at home hair dye when trying to save a little doe? What brands do you use? Any tips or tricks?
Honestly it depends on how big of a change you are going for. What color is your hair now and what color are you thinking of coloring it?0 -
Lucky for me, my best friend/cousin has a license and does mine for free. She is excellent
I'd like to add how horrible box color is. It's about the same price to go to Sally's or another beauty supply store and buy the color and developer yourself and mix them.0 -
Hi yes defiantly, i colour my hair at home all the time - i love the live xl range - purples and reds. A tip put vaseline around your hairline to stop colour staining your face . xx0

I had to pinky-swear to my stylist that I would never color at home again. I don't recall the actual shade I bought, but we referred to it as "White Trash Barbie Blonde". It wasn't pretty.0

Would never consider doing it myself, nor going to another stylist - been at the same one for 16 years. Not cheap, but well worth it! Good luck!0

Alright.
As Hairstylist I am obligated to say go to a salon!!!
But as a girl who loves saving some money..
I would say if you MUST diy I would suggest going to a Sally's Beauty Supply or supply house open to the public.
I will cost less than a salon for sure, but just a bit more than the dreaded box color.
I NEVER recommend a box color.
Any questions feel free to ask =]
HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!0 -
I get it done at the salon. Even as short as it is, I have a TON of hair and it takes two people to do it. But, if I could do it myself, i would.0

I've been coloring my hair at home for 23 years and refuse to pay ridiculous amounts of money to a stylist to do it. I've used Feria and loreal excellence and liked both. If you are in the red shades, like I am, you have to find the balance that works for you - I switched to L'oreal's warm brown to get just the right shade of dark auburn because the actual auburns were too red for me.
I've gone to a salon to have my hair colored twice and both times I was disappointed with the color and the fact I paid SO MUCH for something that looked no better than what I had been doing myself.0 -
Lightening: salon
darkening: at home0 -
At home. Unfortuantly, I've been cursed with the grey hair gene. They used to call my mom Aunt Camelion, cause she was always dying her hair different colors :noway:
Anyways, i use Loreal Excellence Cream. It's such a money saver to do it yourself, 8 bucks compared to 30, it's a no brainer for me0 -
Well, I like to dye my hair blonde, anytime I do it at home it turns orangey...and I've tried tons of brands...or it turns TOO blonde, and then fades to orange in a couple of weeks. With that said, I LOVE going to the salon! They do a wonderful job and it makes me look and feel fresh, I just wish it didn't cost so much...0

I'm a stylist and I go to a salon to get it done because it looks better and it's a treat for me! The store bought stuff is not nearly as good as the professional products...so I say it's totally worth going to get it professionally done.0
-
Tried at-home once, and nearly all my hair broke off! I definitely go to a salon now!0
-
My Hair is meduim brown and I only keep dyeing to dark is to cover the 3 gray hairs I have. Plus it always fades and looks red and cheap after about 6 weeks.0
-
I've used just about every haircolor on the market. Unless I have to get highlights, I almost always do my own.
What's funny is the best haircolor I've ever used so far is Revlon, which is about $3.99 a box at Walmart. I've used Feria with good results as well (and it makes your hair smell AMAZING). Loreal has good coverage, but I find it to be very drying.
Or, go to a beauty supply store and mix your own! The instructions are right on the bottle and the staff can recommend something if you're thinking of mixing colors.0 -
I would say depends on what you want done..
Me personally, I always do my own hair....I color my hair often, and can go from black to platinum in about 2 weeks time, and have been every color there is, red, black, brown, white, pink, blue....... but I have learned how to do this with MUCH trial and error! I normally get all my supplies from sallys, but the conditioners that are in the at home coloring kits are great, and when I go dark I sometimes use those just for the conditioner.....0 -
i shop at Sally Beauty Supply for all my stuff, and the people there are always willing to help with colors and brands best for your hair! I've been doing my own for years, and still have amazing hair, and haven't spent a ton of money!0

^^Ditto the haircolor brand, ditto the reason why I do mine at home.0 -
I've always done mine at home. I don't see any problem with at home coloring as long as you choose the right shade for your skin tone. I've used Clairol Hydrience and Loreal Preference both with good results. It's seems crazy to pay to have it done at a salon, especially if you're only going lighter or darker a couple of shades which is so easy. Drastic changes or special effects, well then I can understand paying a salon.0
-
I think it depends on what your hair is like. Mine easily changes colors and I haven't had any problems with coloring other thant highlights that I actually got from a stylist that I had to cut 8 inches off. For someone with naturally very dark or light hair trying to radically change color should probably be done professionally though.0

I use body-art quality henna for hair. It's a lot of work though and not cheap. And only good if you're dying your hair red, brown or black. I mix henna + indigo to get auburn. It makes my hair super healthy and shiny. I love, love, LOVE it and I get compliments all the time...

From the song "Everybody's Free (to Wear Sunscreen)" (1998)....Don't mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85. What's so bad about rockin' the color nature gave you? I'm wearing my first sparks of gray proudly.0
-
i used to do it at home, but now i go to the beauty college & let the students do it at cheap prices.
they CANT screw it up cuz the teacher is right there with them every step of the way.
now i can get a whole head color (to cover the gray) , PLUS 2-3 different highlites for $20 !!!!
PS: im the one in the profile pic WITH hair! lol0 -
I do my own. I like the ones that somehow combine high and low lights to create a range of color, it doesn't look so flat. Feria has one of those. Having some gray hair also does that, since it doesn't take the color as well, it creates some natural looking variation. The real problem is roots. It's hard to do the roots, let it sit, then do the rest. Hard for me anyway. So it's not perfect, but since I pay a lot for a quality haircut every 5 weeks, I like to save money on the color.0

Completely agreed!! Whenever I've gone to a salon, the color (except for black, of course) fades within a week. A WEEK!! Something I paid over $60 to do is gone in a week?! No thanks. Or when I asked for a different color, I get the same exact thing, but I'm told "oh it's there, you just can't see it." Ugh. I usually dye my hair black, and I do it myself at home...my favorite is L'Oreal Feria, about $10/box, and when I can't find that, usually any other brand will do. There are a few I don't like, because they're way too runny and make too much of a mess, but I know them only by what they look like, not their exact name. I will say, that when I go to a salon for getting my hair completely black, it's worth it, because she doesn't miss anything...when I do it at home, I might end up with small pieces of brown. I'm currently not dying it, since I'm letting the black grow out, but once I do, I may go to a stylist for some highlights, since that's something I'd never attempt at home, personally, since I've never done it before.0 -
i used to do mine myself until i tried to go from light blonde to my natural shade of dark ash blonde and it took on a grey tone, it was really bad!!!. if i was going to go back to blonde blonde i would do it myself still.!
my sister just colored her hair a light auburn and it ended up brown. neither of us did a strand test lke w should have and in her case it was because she bought the same brand and color she always gets and it never did that before mine reason was i was just to lazy lol
i however do my kids hair and it usually works just fine so if you do go with doing it yourself be sure to do a strand test!!!!0 -
I always go to the salon. If i can't afford it I will wait till I can. For me, healthy looking hair is what I strive for.
I find that unless you have very thick, strong hair eventually the damage will show.
I don't want covered greys or a pretty color on hair that looks like hay/damaged. that is just my .o2. :flowerforyou:0 -
Normally I colour my hair at home, but if I want a treat, or to get a new style, I'll go to a salon. I've been greying since I was 21, and I refuse to go out without a fight.0
-
I dye my own hair about every 4-8 weeks and am selective about the brands I use to dye my hair. Been dyeing my own hair since I was 19 and it is still in good condition.0
