Woman who say they don't lift because they don't want to look bulky, is like saying you don't want to work because you don't want to make a million dollars.

You have to work REALLY hard to gain that much muscle, and even then, some won't even come close.

I was really into heavy lifting last year. It made me feel good and I really increased my strength. I would wear a HRM while doing the New Rules of Lifting for Women program and would burn as much (or more) calories while lifting as I did in the same amount of time on an elliptical. Then, the gym membership got a little too pricey for me and I had to give it up =(

Eventually, I want to start doing heavy lifting again. I was thinking about just slowly buying some basic equipment, until I have a decent setup for simple lifting routines.

What really upsets me sometimes is that I know that the key to really toned and sculpted body is weights. I'm so mad that I don't have the equipment. If anyone has any ideas on how to mimic the effects of lifting without having the proper equipment, please share!

Here's what's funny to me. Women will usually say that men and women are totally different. When it comes to romance, child care, what's important, what is not, feelings, blah, blah blah.

But when it comes to exercise and lifting, a lot of women compare their bodies reacting to that of a man's. That because men lift weights, that if a female does, her body will react the same.

So go back to thinking that we are different and lift the HEAVY weights. Every female I've ever worked with will attest that this is what made the difference in their transformation.

Do pushups, squats, lunges, tricep dips on a chair, etc. You can use your own body weight for strength training. Use things around the house to add weight eventually. Resistance bands are usually fairly cheap if you want to get those instead of weights.

I am all for lifting now! Most people assume us women will bulk up, but really, it all depends on how heavy and how many reps your doing! yay!

I sooooo agree with you, I have to say I find it so silly when I hear women say "I don't want to bulk up" not possible. I have a trainer and that is pretty much all we do, she said u don't need a trainer for cardio, she tells me what and how to do it. but I have been lifting and I LOVE it, I swear it gives off something, makes me feel strong and I love being soar afterwards, lets me know i have done something. Here's to lifting

You're only limited by your imagination, but pulls are the most difficult to replicate. Mark Lauren has a book You Are Your Own Gym. Do some searches and see what you can glean from sites.

Great info! I'll be going to B&N this weekend to check out this book. Thanks a lot!

I'm not afraid to lift heavy, I just don't want to. I don't enjoy it and I don't like the look it gives. Whether bulky or not, I don't like to have a lot of visible muscle. I just like to be firm (not flabby) but not muscley. If I could be firm without any strength training like I could when I was younger, I would. Pushups, squats, lunges, weights. Ugh!! It's just not fun to me.

I really want to learn the in and outs of lifting. I hear different things and I want the facts. I hate cardio because I have asthma and it is so hard to do intense cardio work outs. I want to know how much cardio and how much lifting I need to do to get the results I want. Any helpful information would be great! Thank you for your post. Terri

If you're not trying to build muscle, what on earth do you think you're doing in the gym?

Here's a link to an article that really impressed and inspired me. It's proof positive that you can lift CRAZY amounts of weight as a woman and not look like a bodybuilder or a man! If you think she looks like a body builder (May 2011 pic), then I guess for me, personally, I'm totally, 100% ok with looking like a bodybuilder!

My husband is asthmatic and has been his whole life. He and I both ran a half marathon this past spring and are currently training for our 2nd half marathon. He does some very intense kettlebell workouts. His mantra "Asthmatic...no excuses!" So, start slow and build up... you can totally do and learn to love it! And how much? As much as you are willing to give!

I suggest getting the book New Rules of Lifting for Women.
  • I agree, I love to lift heavy have been doing it for 9months know. It is funny how women think they need to lift light weights, I have had 4 women in my gym actually ask how they can get my arms and shoulders I said lift heavy and do it right so I normally ask them what weight they are lifting I have got the answer of 3lbs dumbbells I did have to stop myself from laughing. So I showed and helped them and really just showed them it can be done. I see them occasionally and they say it is the best I of course sent them to bodybuilding.com (my fav website) in my gym I am normally the only women their lifting weights and the rest sit on cardio, ha ha for them I will take my weights anyday.

  • I just want to know more about where to start when you haven't done it for years? I have dumbbells from 5 to 20lbs two each. I also think I have a bar with weights...I did the "body for life challenge" about 12 years ago but can't remember reps and how many for need of a large amount of weight loss and muscle replacement. Help please? Add and message me if you can help?

Check out to see if you have a freecycle.org in your neighborhood... Make a post that you are wanting weights and see what happens...
