workouts-what to eat and when

For now I am just doing some general cardio and toning exercises, I'm going to start running again soon (not a whole lot, just trying to achieve a 5k for now) and then hopefully Insanity by the end of the year.
I am NOT trying to lose weight, I'm just trying to tone up and get in better shape.
Workouts will generally be after work which is late afternoon, or earlier on the weekends.
Should I be eating more before or after workouts (especially when I work out in the morning on weekends, breakfast first or no?) and what % of it should be protein, carbs, etc?

[I know this topic has probably been done before, sorry!]

Thanks!

if you get right up and work out eat somthing small and I mean right up then there. Otherwise generally eat breakfast then workout with in 45-60 min after.

For the most part, it doesn't matter nearly as much as hitting your numbers by the end of the day/week, and your own personal comfort and preference when it comes to meal timing. Let MFP handle the numbers and let your intuition handle the details like timing.

My nutritionist said that the you should never work out on an empty stomach...ever. And you should eat some protein within thirty minutes of working out. Other wise, I have never notice anything. Also, you should always drink a glass of water with in an hour of waking up. Really, you should just follow your instinct.
