hi everyone
i have recently bought a macbook pro. its not here yet but i was wondering how the heck i transfer my itunes over. i have an external hard drive but its formatted for windows. will a normal memory stick do the job, is an ethernet cable the best route or shall i just keep my pc on standby lol

Replies

  • If im not mistaken Macs can / will read a windows file system... Im a PC user and ive shared music with my mac user friends in the past simply by plugging my external hard drive into thier mac.

it depends on your memory stick. Most memory sticks are able to be formatted to use on both PC and MAC platforms. I have used 3 or 4 different kinds of memory sticks, no problem. I use both types of platforms.
  • ok so my hard drive should be ok then? cool. its just that i heard the mac might ask if i want to format it which would result in all my data being erased. if that happens i will be up-set. lol
  • You can share your iTunes music with another computer, using a wireless network. When you get your mac book, just have them both open and on the same network. You just follow the prompts in iTunes for sharing> Good luck. I have a mac book pro and love it.

Your Mac can read your PC external drive (well there are some exotic edge cases) so that's fine.

OSX iTunes library is slightly differently arranged than Windows, so there may be some issues using the /library/ part, but the music/videos/apps etc will be ok.

Make (and keep) a backup until you've got it working just the way you want!

  • thats all I did when I changed over from pc to mac. there are also some great tutorials on the Apple website which shows you how to make a smooth change from pc to mac> have fun.

I just sent you a message basically saying the exact same thing, guess I should have scanned the whole thread first! Anyway, I LOVE my Macbook Pro. I won't waste another penny on a PC ever again! Easy to use!
  • that's what everyone says! the initial cost seems a lot but actually in terms of what you get quality wise, totally worth it

You can buy a package which will transfer everything you want from your PC to your Mac... Or you can transfer all you music to your iDisk and then added them to your iTunes library.

Depending on the memory of any portable devices you have you can install your songs on there and then sync them with your Mac.

I left the windows world 6 years ago and have never looked back...

Most windows formats are recognized on both platforms. The same cant be said about crapbook, sorry macbook formated harddrives.

Thats the only comment Im leaving, and Im staying away from this thread, as honestly, there are few things I hate in this world, but one of them is definatly macs

if u have an ipod, just use that to transfer ur music.

macs are amazing btw. not sure if u r just making the switch, but i finally gave in. ^^ My moms friend is very popular in the computer industry, and told us to buy Macs lol. They really are amazing, and most people I know use them as their main system. ^^

    good luck! :D
  • thanks everyone. i have a ipod so i'll try and use that if my external hard drive doesn't work.

has anyone used Lion? how is it to use? i've had a small 'go' at snow leopard but lion looks like an ipad lol
