Fainting whilst exercising but 10k next week - help!

I've got my first 10k race coming up a week today (next Sunday) but I need some advice! For the last week and a bit I've been having an allergic reaction to something which has left me with swollen itchy patches all over my skin and a swollen face particularly lips and tongue! I've been to the GP and been given antihistamines, anti biotics and been taking paracetamol for the fever. However it's been getting harder and harder to train. I just went out for a 10 mile cycle and after the first 3 miles I had to get off my bike before I fainted and lie on the ground so I had to return home. I know I'm not overdoing it as I've been quite good at training for a while now.

I don't want to give up and not do the 10k but I'm scared I'll really hurt myself. Does anybody have any experience with these symptoms while exercising or any advice on what to do?

Thanks for reading, any help would be really appreciated!!

:-)

Definitely go back to your GP....something is not right.

Antibiotics will suck the energy right out of you. That is what my guess would be. While I was training for a half marathon I had to go on antibiotics for a serious staph infection and I could barely run one mile some days.
Good luck. I hope you are able to do the race.

I agree that you should go back to your GP. Hopefully, your symptoms will clear up, but if you're not feeling better, don't do the 10K. I know it would be disappointing, but there will be others, and your long term health is what's most important. Also, you don't want to have a crappy experience doing your 10K, even if it doesn't cause any damage. Now, if you were being chased by zombies and HAD to run 10K, that would be understandable. Otherwise, don't lock yourself in; if this race doesn't work out, well, then, it just doesn't work out.

check the foods you are eating...when you said that your lips and that...thats what happens to me when i get an allergic reaction from a food...and it could be a new allergy since im now allergic to apples and plums and never have been allergic to them before
  • I get hives when i exercise. Its called Exercise Induced Anaphalaxis. Its dangerous and you need to carry a epi pen with you at all times! See an allergist immediately! My airway was swollen shut once from it and I passed out! its scary and very very dangerous.

Thanks for all your advice. I won't do the race if it's really bad I just wish I knew what was causing the problems. I've signed up with 3 others and I just don't want to let people down. I'll feel really disappointed in myself too.

Exercising is just not good for you! ;-)

hi1_3183 that sounds so scary! I don't think it can be that for me though. I would like to see an allergy specialist as I have had this happen to me years ago but it's only ever been 2 times in my life. I know you can develop allergies anytime which is quite scary.

I know it must be disappointing knowing that you might not be able to complete the 10 K that you've been working so hard for. Hopefully, you will be able to run the 10 K. However, you definitely should not run unless you get medical clearance. 10 Ks are held all the time. You should be able to run one soon if you can't run this one.
