I just got done doing some housework -vacuuming and steam mopping the whole house. I wore my HRM to see just how many calories I burned while doing these items. Should I add this to my exercise diary? I would probably subtract a few cals to accommodate when I put vacuum away and got the steam mop out, ect. What do you all think? I was never in my target heart rate while doing these things . Not sure if that's an issue or not. In 42 mins it says I burned 114 cals. Thanks guys!

Yes, I generally add housework to my exercise log. You can search for it under "Cleaning" - then chose the level of effort.

i think it depends on what you put as your activity level. i put mine as moderately active, so i figure all those sort of tasks are just part of my normal activity level. if you put yourself at sedentary then maybe i would..

Depends on what you have your settings at. Mine are at sedentary since I have a sit down job. So sometimes I log housework it I do deep cleaning. I see some logging it and as long as they are still losing who cares. Some here get on people on boards that log housework yard work etc. But who cares how you burn it as long as you are losing.

The main thing is what is this set at?

How would you describe your normal daily activities?
Sedentary: Spend most of the day sitting (e.g. bank teller, desk job)
Lightly Active: Spend a good part of the day on your feet (e.g. nurse, salesman)
Active: Spend a good part of the day doing some physical activity (e.g. waitress, mailman)
Very Active: Spend most of the day doing heavy physical activity (e.g. bike messenger, carpenter)

its all up to you. If its not something you do on a regular basis and feel you exerted enough energy, then why not?

I have it at light I believe. I'm mainly up on my feet all day. I have a 2.5 yr old so I don't get the lovely chance to sit on my booty too long.

So you gave me others things to consider. Thank you! I forgot about selecting that when we did our setup.

Vacuuming I do everyday at some point ( one toddler, 2 dogs, 2cats) I steam mop minimum once a week. I guess I really need to think about this. I see some others people adding it so I thought why not, but I didn't exert myself like I do on my treadmill or elliptical... Hmmmm? Thanks for the help!
  • You know I did and I actually would do again. I only clean once a week and straight through so for me its a work out. Its not part of my every day routine. Im not a professional but what other people are saying about checking what mode you set it on and going by that also sounds right. (Sedentary vs. active) I guess I would ask a doc or maybe even a trainer.Good luck friend!
