Why isn't sodium adjusted as you exercise?

Hey guys! So, you know how MFP adjusts all of your goals as you exercise and not just your calorie goal? Why does sodium not adjust? Sodium is expelled through sweat, which means you should replenish your sodium levels after working out/sweating a lot, right?

because sodium is a set amount, the only things that change are the nutrients that are based on percentage0

I think it is a given in current times that you are having enough salt. If anything, I would worry about not getting enough potassium. Sodium is also not really a goal you want to hit, they gave us a recommended dietary maximum0

Because you really should never exceed 2,500 in a day. I always shoot for between 1,200-1,800.0

See I understand where your coming from, basically on here as people have highlighted the sodium intake is a set amount per day and this is the MAX you should take in, I always aim to be well under it.
However on days where I do a lot of working out and sweat a lot, Ill increase what I'd normally take in, to compensate and avoid those dreaded Muscle Cramps, but still staying under the MAX on here
Hope that helps0 -
High sodium intake can lead to elevated blood pressure. High blood pressure is the major cause of cardiovascular disease and a risk factor for stroke and kidney disease.
^ According to an article I read.
We all know salt isn't good for us, the government just lowered the intake recently. I see a huge difference when my intake is over on sodium even if I sweat and drink myself sick with water lol. I can tell by even how my shoes fit me, my feet swell when my intake is over.0 -
Probably because they know there is really no way to not get enough unless you eat all raw and unsalted stuff. Yes the body needs to keep the sodium and other electrolytes up but really the max for the day should be 2500 no matter what.0

I agree 110%
I try to never go above 1500mg a day.
I think a better focus would be potassium intake.0 -
I guess this all makes sense, but I struggle so much with sodium! Too many convenience foods! I think my biggest problem is when I'm eating back some exercise calories, but don't have the extra sodium allowance (especially on days where I burn excess of 1000 calories).
Thanks for the feedback!0 -
the best way to see if you are getting enough is through the blood test done by a doc. Most people get enough and are often over. However, if you are well hydrated, don't add salt to your food and sweat a lot, its possible you may not be getting enough, which is just as bad as getting too much. So if you really want to ensure you are within your range have your doc do a test.0
