Will fiber make you gain weight?

I'm trying to understand how I'm reacting to different nutrients and realized that each time I eat anything that has fiber not only does my scale go up but I get hungrier as well. So I'm wondering if fiber doesn't really help weight loss...

  • I don't know, I guess people are different Fiber has been pretty good to me...but if it's not being good to you, lower your intake.

hrm, funky. Normally high fiber content fills you up and you get hungrier later. It's usually considered a good idea to have a high-fiber breakfast as it often means you'll eat less at lunch. Are you sure it's fiber in isolation?
  • Since fiber is an important nutrient, I would probably advice against trying to cut fiber out of your diet. I'm not sure how you would be able to tell that it's specifically fiber that's causing weight gain.

Two types of fibre - soluable and insoluable. Soluable fiber's job is to absord water as you digest your food and make the passage through your colon easier. Insoluable fibre creates more of a gel-like substance and does the same thing - helps keep things moving along.

Not enough fibre and you'll be constipated and grumpy. Too much and same thing. However, a diet with the right balance will keep you regular, and that's a good thing.

A meal high in fibre should make you feel full longer, as the foods take longer to digest.

Targets for fibre for an adult are in the 25 to 30g per day range. You can track it on MFP.

Fiber has so many benefits, I would hold off on reducing it. What you may be experiencing is the reality that fiber draws water into the stool, adding bulk and weight to the stool. If you aren't (I'm trying to be delicate here) eliminating your solid waste before you weigh, the reality is that your poop weighs more, not necessarily you. You might want to told off on weighing until you've moved your bowels in the morning and see if that makes the difference. I have (still trying to be delicate) had a difference of nearly 2 pounds weighing before and after a BM.

In the meantime, increased dietary fiber is instrumental in eliminating belly fat, maintaining blood sugar levels, keeping you regular, preventing colo/rectal cancer and reducing or eliminating hemorrhoids. It also prevents the development of diverticulitis, which is a nasty disease!

Eat your fiber. Not only will it help you LOSE weight, but it will help with many other aspects of your health besides. But build up slowly so that you have enough probiotic bacteria in your gut to process it, or it will give you very bad gas.
  • Thank you all. The water retention makes sense. I'm trying to substitute my pasta for miracle noodles which are virtually no calories and putting in a Fiber one bar as an afternoon snack. I'll take the advice. Appreciate it
