Measuring Body fat?

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a good way to measure body fat without calipers? I have tried a bunch of online sites that give me a range of 18.4 to 31.7%, putting me in the athletic and unhealthy range simultaneously.

Thanks!
Emilly

Mine is measured by the scale at my personal trainer's office. Many doctors offices also have scales that can measure it for you. You can probably even buy one for yourself, but I'm not sure how expensive they are, and as far as accuracy, I'd probably only trust some of the more expensive ones like the trainers/doctors use.

I do mine on the scale in the chemist, lots of them have them and I believe you can use any way to measure as long as you stick to it.
  • I've got a Kinetik Body Composition Monitor, only cost £10.00, well worth it. Tried it before i went doctors and the numbers i got were the same.

Go to a diet pill clinic and act like you want the pills, the more reputable clinics have the scales which also measure your hydration levels and your body fat percentage. Once you ask if they measure for those, just go home after you are weighed and they give you your numbers :) The only charge you incur is if you actually purchase the medication.

How does that convert to American dollars?

You really should have a trainer make that analysis for you due to the margin of error in different testing procedures for body fat. Like my BMI calculated from height and weight says I'm borderline obese. Yet I have a nice little web of veins runnin' around my trunk...

I saw a Bowflex scale for around $25 at my Costco. It does bf% using electric impedence. Can't comment on it's accuracy but that's a decent price.

    About 16-17 dollars me thinks
  • I ordered mine from Amazon- Omron hand held body fat analyzer-
    it runs about $30- 35.

It has great reviews and users say it compares to the ones at the gym and Dr. office.

I have never been able to compare my figures to those, but I'm seeing those numbers go DOWN steadily,
so at least it gives me some way to gauge my progress
since bathroom scales can be SO moody....

Bioelectrical impedence as used by the monitoring scales can vary according to many different factors but, as long as you use them at the same time of day (eg. first thing in the morning, after the toilet, before eating), they will give you a consistent reading to show progress. Due to varying hydration, they will apparently give you a high body fat reading in the morning - the best time of day for accurate body fat is apparently mid afternoon, a couple of hours after eating and you shouldn't use them after an intense workout (dehydration).

I've tried the three different formulas on www.fat2fitradio.com and, as they gave different results, just averaged them.
