So my mom has joined MFP about 6 weeks ago or so...She has lost a total of 11 lbs (good)... (ETA: She actually joined 8/20/11, so not quite 6 weeks)...
Here is the problem..she is complaining alot that she is only losing 1 lb. per week (which is normal)..and that this is such a slow process.
I can't get it in her head that she is slowing her weight loss down immensely as she is only eating around 1000-1100 calories on average per day...She thinks that eating less will yield bigger results (as many people do think when they first start out)...Can someone post some words of wisdom or some informative links that will debunk her theory? Maybe hearing it from you guys will make her listen...
PS...If you want to Friend her her name is pgall59

Hey mom,
Just listen to your daughter!0 -
First of all, 11 pounds in 6 weeks = almost 2 pounds a week!
Secondly, you are right, slow is better.
Tell her that her brain will have the time to catch up with her body if she loses the weight slowly, which for me has been amazing. I have lost LOTS of weight many times, and all times previously have been with severe restricting and/or fad dieting. I lost the weight so quickly that even when I got to a healthy weight, I still saw myself as fat. So I started eating like a fat person again, and always regained.
By losing the weight slowly (about a pound a week at first, and now at about a pound a month), I don't see myself as a fat person anymore. I see a healthy woman in the mirror, and I want to continue to eat healthy because of that.0 -
Your body reacts to what you do to it. If you starve yourself your body will start saving fat. Slow is better. You didn't put the weight on over night. You shouldn't expect to lose it over night. Good luck!0

well, we are a fast society. We see infomercials saying that you can lose some unrealistic amount per week but my question is where are they in a year or two? It is very hard but slow is the best way to go b/c you are more likely to keep it off. Also, if you are not eating enough cals you are doing your body a disservice. Where will you be in a year? Is this a lifesyle change or are you just starving yourself for the short term? I personally am in for the long run. IMHO0

Ok so your mom sounds just like me and you sound just like my daughter. I would love for the weight to be gone and I figure if I dont eat that it's better. I have decided that I will eat as close to my calorie limit as I can however I am trying not to eat my exercise calories.0

You really probably should eat half of them back. You may possibly slow down your weight gain by not doing it and netting low cals.0
