using egg whites to add protein

I love fruit and coffee flavored smooties for breakfast. What about egg whites (Egg beater type, in a carton from the store, too much sodium), dried egg whites (seem awfully high in sodium)..... I've seen smoothies and frosties recipes on internet with egg whites for added protein, I was thinking of using regular egg whites straight from fresh eggs, to keep from getting all the sodium but I am afraid of contamination,. Anyone have any thoughts?

I wouldn't recommend it. The carton egg whites are pasteurised so they don't have the risk of bacteria, whole eggs do not so you are risking food poisoning, drinking raw eggs.0

IMHO, it is probably best to not do that. I am paranoid about undercooked food though because I have had lots of heartburn and ulcer issues so some of the medicine I take makes me more prone to food borne illnesses. Do you eat brown rice? You can make a non-fried fried rice, just scramble around the cooked rice with the egg whites and some veggies in just the teeniest little bit of olive oil. It is delicious. I add a little bit of low sodium soy sauce, but even the low sodium version has quite a bit so you could try some other sauces or spices to make it more flavorful.0

1 serving of egg whites in a carton is about 75 mg on sodium which is only 3% for the day. I would use this so you can mix right in with your smoothie or shake. Great way to get extra protein.0

I eat raw eggs. Seriously. You'll be fine.
And really, if you're looking for the protein, eat the yoke too. You're missing out on over half of the nutritional value of eggs by eating only the whites.0 -
great food for thought0
