Thyroid Meds and Weight Loss

I've been on Levothyroxine for about a year or so now. I've felt fantastic on this medication, and have been able to ramp up my workouts, get my portions under control, and have a lost some weight, too.

For those of you who take thyroid meds for hypothyroidism (I think my official diagnosis is Hashimodos...?), how did your dosage change after losing weight? Did you need MORE, or LESS, or...?

I see my doc in November, and things feel OK for now...just curious.

Hi. Feel free to friend me if you want. I have Grave's disease and am hyperthyroid. Got on methimizole in January and promptly gained 10 lbs. It's been surprisingly sticky; difficult to lose. But my efforts have been intermittent as well. Hence my presence here.

I am taking the same meds. VERY low dosages. I started taking my meds, and hard core excercising, eating well and lost 30+ lbs. I stopped my meds for a few months and started feeling very sluggish again ( I was also just being plain lazy )

I stopped the meds becasue my levels balanced out and were steady. I went to the DR a few weeks ago and am now back on them as my balances are outta wack again.

I've taken Levoxyl for 12 years now (Graves). I took the same amount during a pregnancy, and through many different weights. Only this last year did it all go whacky. I turned 50 and decided to get in shape. I had 50 pounds to lose. I lost 20 quickly and then despite dieting and exercise I stopped losing weight (I put it down as menopause) and then in the last 6 months I've gained close to 20 pounds. I get my TSH tested every 6 months. Last year it had gone up but doc didn't tell me and figured we'd change the med level if it remained in the higher range. It was ridiculously high this last time. After 3 months of changing med levels, finally my TSH is close to my normal again. During the whole time I kept dieting and exercising. I hate to think what would have happened if I hadn't. So now I'm back to where I started. Cruel very cruel.

My guess is being at the end of menopause was the culprit. Hormone levels do have an effect!

So make sure you see your blood work results and that they remain consistent.

And, yes, people do roll their eyes at me when I say I have thyroid issues. LOL

I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and hashimoto's in 2006. I gained about 15 pounds after surgery! My levels had to be kept high, because this supresses cancer cells. I thought that I would lose easeily, because basically I was hyperthyroid. Well, in my case it was exactly the opposite, so after two clean scans the doctor lowered my levels and I was able to lose about 9lbs of that. I still would like to lose about 20lbs, but not sure if it's possible. It's such a struggle now with menopause setting in too! Ugh...
  • Just started taking synthroid for hypo and still trying to figure out what is wrong with my pituitary gland (MRI scheduled.) I have been training for a marathon all summer, lost 20-30lbs fast in the spring...nothing since. Just trying to keep marching forward and take the weightloss as I get it.
