Ok so this might be a dumb question only because I don't cook a lot. Can you thaw out meat by just running it under hot water and then cook right after?

  • It's safer to thaw meat in the fridge over night but if you don't have time then put it in a bowl in your sink filled with cold water. Then replace the water every 5-10 minutes until it thaws out. This helps to make sure the meat on the outer edges doesn't get too warm and further into the danger zone where bacteria can become active again and multiply, before the middle of the meat is thawed. You could also thaw it in a microwave and then cook right afterwards as well, times and microwave power depend upon the meat you are thawing.
  • Do not run it under hot water. If anything run it under cool water, inside a bag so the water doesn't actually touch the meat. Hot water can increase bacteria in and on the meat.

yes the meat should be in some sort of container, either it's own packaging or a plastic ziploc etc
  • you can run it under cold water. or if you have a microwave, use the defroster.

You can also defrost meat by putting it in a sealed package, like a ziploc bag, and letting it sit submerged in a bowl of cold, but not frigid, water. You don't want to use lukewarm or hot water because it will promote bacteria. If you know you will be having the meat cut up, such as for stir fry, I would recommend cutting it before freezing. This will increase surface area for defrosting and thus decrease your defrost time.

I just defrost it in the microwave, otherwise leave it out in the morning when you go to work/out (not in the sun).
