How often should you weigh yourself/track your weight?

Replies

  • I weigh myself every morning to make sure I'm still roughly on track, but I only track it on here once a week. MFP suggests once a week but I don't like surprises... especially not nasty ones!

    ONLY once per week.

Before signing up here - I had been using Sunday as my weigh-in day.

You never never EVER want to be weighing in every day. If you keep seeing fluctuations, its gonna mess with your head....

Once a week. I weigh myself right after I wake up, after I go to the bathroom, completely naked... on Saturday mornings. You weigh yourself every day and you will develop a complex.

Please read this topic about weight fluctuations. It'll help explain why weighing too often is a bad idea.

  • There a are Pros and Cons of both weighing yourself on a daily basis and a weekly basis, but the clear winner is weighing yourself just about once per week.

Weighing yourself daily can help you keep track of weight that's trying to sneak up on you... But our weight is known to fluctuate anywhere between 2-5 pounds in a single DAY, due to water weight gain/retention, etc... So you may not be getting an accurate read that way... And seeing the scale suddenly go way up in a single day can really crush your spirit, even if common sense is telling you that it's probably just water.

So, you should aim to choose ONE day a week, at the SAME TIME each time - usually early, right after you wake up and before you eat breakfast.

You'll get a better idea as to your progress that way. :)

The general standard is once a week, same time of day, same amount of clothing. Many people weigh naked in the morning after the big morning pee and before breakfast to get the truest weight. I recently decided to weigh daily so that I can get more information about how my body is reacting to my most diet and exercise changes since I'm struggling with a plateau. However, I still only log it on MFP once a week. Weighing daily can cause some people to obsess about that number and a natural gain of a pound or two (from a big meal the night before, lets say) that would resolve itself away (after that meal makes its exit) can stress out some people and create a lot of unnecessary anxiety. So, I think weigh-ins really depend on the person and what is most helpful for each individual.

yeah, so i do what everyone says not to do...weigh everyday!!! i already know there will be flucuations, so that doesnt bother me...i use daily weighing as a tool to see if what i am doing is working or if i need to change something up. i have used this method to gauge how much my water intake needed to be minimum, what type of workouts are working and not and also if my food intake is too low...i have had gastric bypass and if i consume too few nutrients, then i know the scale shows it and i have to adjust supplement intake! but all in all your weigh in process is up to you, whatever best suits you...i would say no matter how often you weigh, be consistent...same time of day, same amount of clothing, etc. and most importantly keep up with measurements, you will lose there even when you dont on the scales!

I literally threw my scale away years ago. I only weigh myself to re-calculate calories. Weighing yourself every week is not good in my mind ( my own opinion) for SOME. The reason WHY is because if you are just starting out it can be a detriment. It took years to gain weight so don't expect it to go away overnight.

Instead of focusing on weight focus on inches. You could weigh exactly the same and yet have way lower body fat.

There's nothing wrong with weighing yourself every week(for some). But remember it's not a sprint it's a marathon.

    Consistency is the key.

I actually weigh myself every morning [even though everyone says not to]. It helps me stay on track. I know it's going to fluctuate, so that doesn't really bother me much. It just depends on the person. Some can do it everyday & not have it mess with their head, others can only do it once a week.

I prefer to weigh myself every day or every other day. Sometimes I just won't feel like weighing in so I don't.

I know weight fluctuates but when its fluctuating in my favor, I love to see it! I weigh in every morning when I'm going through a losing streak because it helps keep me motivated. I also weigh in just about daily during my cycle so I can keep an eye on my weight gain.

I weigh myself every morning. I enjoy it. I look forward to it. Every day I look forward to a new low number. Yes, daily weight fluctuates, and I understand and expect it.

But almost invariably, if weight goes up it is because I cheated on my diet one or two days before, and seeing it on the scale keeps me aware of what cheating does.

I can gain weight easily and fast. I could erase weeks of effort in one week. It would be too easy for me to get complacent weighing only once a week.

I weigh in everyday ,but take my weigh in for a Friday works for me.

I also take my measurements every fortnight which seems to go down faster than the weight. I have a 32 waist now, but have stayed the same weight for a fortnight.

Should you? Whatever works for you.

Myself, I weigh daily, and I do weigh-ins once every 8 days (why 8? I feel like I always loose some extra weight with that extra day, lol). I wiegh myself to make sure Im on track, and see how my body is currently reacting. I zigzag my dieting, so its important to make sure my body is reacting right to my dieting

I started to weigh in every Monday morning, I hope it keeps me from going crazy over the weekend. My plan is just until I reach the halfway point with my weight loss and have had a chance to create healthier habits for myself so that I can be able to face any temptation because I am still very weak at the moment. Then I think I will change to weighing in on Fridays and enjoy the weekends.

The national weight-loss registry, and huge diary of people who have lost more than 30 lbs and kept it off,
has conclusions they have drawn from the one who are most successful at maintaining their weight.

The walk every day....and....they weigh themselves everyday.

Research has come out showing that people who weigh everyday loss more weight.

The small little tiny thing to consider, which I think all of these good folk are highlighting, is that if you have eating disorders, or your emotions are terribly tied into the exact numbers on the scale, you might want to rethink.

I think what was proposed, weigh everyday just to avoid surprises and actually track the number once a week, is great. I'm sure that will work find.

Even better, again if your emotions won't eat you up, weigh every day *once* enter the number on a graph, and just keep doing that for a few months. Those trends on the graph are about the best info on your progress you can get.

Are there blips on Tuesday's, after the beginning of the month, am I trending down, up, these all pop out on a good graph kept over a couple of months.

I weigh in on Sunday mornings and record it on MFP. However I will check in during the week to make sure my body is not retaining water or if I need to step it up. I try not to make a habit it of it....it can become addicting.

I agree with this. Despite what the Every Weekers say, I don't think the Every Dayers are necessarily wrong; its whatever works for you.

I weigh myself every morning, fully realizing that there may be fluctuations if, for instance, I had a lot of water late at night.

The big advantage this has over the weekly weighers is it provides daily motivation for me to stick to my exercise and diet plans, along with a daily reward for doing so. If I weighed myself every week, I would probably cheat more often on the assumption that "Oh, I'll just make up for it later in the week."
  • Thanks everyone for the feedback!!! Its great to have your suggestions and support!! :)
