This article has a great idea for how to accept a gift of sweets graciously.

My husband is a pastor and we are often offered tasty, but unhealthy sweets. I always say thank you and tell them it looks great. We will either give it to someone else we know, give it to a local non-profit we know, or (as a last resort) toss it. I prefer to give it to someone who needs it, but I no longer feel guilty if I have to toss it. I think that person would probably feel bad if they knew the level of self-loathing eating it would bring.

Thanks. Christmas is coming, and I am amazed how many folks bring cookies to me, even though I'm a trainer. It's hard having them in the house, though, because I LOVE cookies. Yes, I can pass them on, but they are still in the house. And I hate that I have to deny myself so many times. It's not hard to deny wearing a sweater, but it is hard to keep walking by cookies.

So what happens is now that it's garden season, people are giving me apples, tomatoes, zuchinni, carrots and other healthy things. So I make a HUGE deal about it and say, "oh thank you so much for this. And I love getting gifts that I can actually eat!!!" Since these are the same folks that often give me cookies in a month or two, I'm hoping that I have made a big enough deal about enjoying the "better" gifts, that they will get the hint.

Since unhealthy treats are a super common gift with my friends and family the hubby and I just sent out a message prior to the holidays thanking everyone in advance for their wonderful thoughtfulness but to please pass on giving us the sweets and treats due to keeping a healthier lifestyle. Everyone was great about it and a few folks even followed suit as well.

The only treats we let in were some cookies from my families traditional baking day. But I only brought home a couple of each type of cookie rather than the full containers I used to. (and since I was there baking them all I entered all the recipes in MFP and had the exact nutritionals. :D)
