I'm in need of some advice from a hair colorist. I got a bad bleach "highlight" job, and I wanna box color it to a darker brown but I've heard horror stories of hair turning green! please help! If there is anyone here with experience I'll give more details =] Thanks!

Hi there, I feel your pain! lol so the highlights are bleach blonde? What exactly don't you like about them? are they too yellow or orange or do you just generally not like them? Asking because there are different solutions for each problem.

My girlfriend is a hairstylist, and you could be in a world of trouble. Dealing with trying to fix a botched bleach is never good with a kit. MANY MANY horror stories I have been told. My suggestion, make an appointment at a salon, tell them that you need help recovering you hair. Especially with bleach, which is already damaging your hair, your hair can turn terrible colors, from purple to orange. Try a professional. It may cost more, but after you buy a box, damage your hair again, and it still isnt the way you want it, your gonna regret not getting a professional's help

Thank you for your honestly! The problem with going to a professional is that it's just too expensive =[ All the salons here charge $200+ to do a color correction, and thats just not in the cards for me. And if I don't think of something fast, I'm stuck hiding in a hat for who knows how long =[

I don't know where you live, but if they have a Sally's Beauty Supplies store around, you can get help from them. They are usually full of info that they are willing to share. They can direct you to the right product, usually. This saves tons compared to heading back to the salon.
Just make sure you share your concerns with them and they will tell you their honest opinion. Sometimes they will say that you really should head to the salon.
I'd at least try this option before I forked out the dough at the salon.

Thanks. There's a Sally a few min away so I'll have to check it out (with a hat of course lol). But at this point, I'm broke, and do not trust anyone to touch my hair anymore, so a salon is out of the picture =[ I hope someone can give me some advice on box coloring over this massive mess!
  • One time I stripped the black color out of my hair and then dyed over it a few times. The end result was a yucky mess of color. I am a little crazy soi I asked my guy friend to take the clippers to it, so essentially I had a buzz cut with some funky bang thing. I was 20 and could blame it on drinking too much or something. I have always fixed it myself without any proper direction from a proffesional . Even with my "experience" I have nothing valid to offer......sorry and good luck!
Maybe you could just call and ask for suggestion? I live in a small everyone knows everyone type area, so it is a little easier

LOL I did the same thing once. Horrible color and I stripped it and re-dyed it. It wasn't great, but it worked lol. I'm not sure how much that differs from bleaching? And everyone suggested this girl! And all the other salons I called are gonna charge at least $200 for a color correction =/

well, the easiest box colour fix would be to do a light colour over it, such as a darker blonde, a reddish colour or a light brown. the darker you try to go over a bad bleach, the more likely the resulting colour will be gross. i would also reccomend finding the best conditioning treatment you can afford. get the bleached hair back into good condition and you will find that whatever colour you put on top of it will fade slower, which means you can then choose a colour that is slightly darker than the last, and slowly build up the colour to the darkness you want. that takes a while though, as you don`t want to recolour one after the other very quickly, you need weeks etween colourings. it`s really hard to go dark over blonde like that unfortunetly, specially using a box colour.
  • I just meant to call for suggestion.....not to go there to have them mess it up again......if there is someone you trust that can give you a suggestion?
    I like CallejaFairey 's suggestion!
The best of luck to you

oh, and honestly, if the bleaching is really that bad...go back to the salon and complain. if you are unhappy, and calmly explain why, usually you can get a fix from them.even if you don`t want the original girl to touch your hair, the owner should work something out for you. after all, word of mouth is the best advertisement, and even them willing to work with you to correct the colour will be something you will mention, or at least they will hope.

Most of the places I called required a $25 deposit for any consultation or anything. They wouldn't give advice unless I paid them the consultation fee! How insane right!? I'm gonna call my old colorist from my home state tomorrow and see what he advises =/

Thank you for your amazing advice. Looks like I'm gonna be wearing a hat for quite some time! It's embarrassing! And I refuse to have them touch my hair because she messed up the first time, and the second time turned out worse! They will be getting NO good feedback from me at all!
