Hi. I weighed 268 on July 1. I want eventually be at 215 which is what I weighed at age 21. Then I want to do explosive weightlifing so I can dunk a basketball for the first time in my life -- and at age 52. The problem is I don't know if my knees will stand up to jumping. Right now my left knee has hurt for three weeks since I tried to do some distance running. I won't be trying that again.

Anyway, I want to learn from you folks and lose weight the correct but effective way.

Unless you have an actual injury or your doctor advises completely against running, you might try again when your knee is not hurting so much. However, start REALLY slowly and carefully-- at that weight (although I don't know your height), running can put a great deal of stress on the body, as you've unfortunately found out. I started running VERY slowly and did way more walking than running for the first 3 months. You might try starting with brisk walking and then pick up your speed to easy jogs for just a minute or 30 second intervals....eventually as you lose more weight running will get easier. Try a program like jeffgalloway.com that recommends walking breaks for ALL runners :)
Good luck! And congrats on the weight loss so far--you're off to a great start!
  • Thanks so much!
  • Thanks for the encouragment! Actually, I don't think my knee is injured. I've had this before for a month or so. But you're right. I'm too heavy even though I am 6 '3". And I am sure my stride wasn't good --too short and choppy. I may try again after a weight loss.

One thing I can do pain-free is ride a bike, so I'll go back to that. 41 lbs lost is awesome, BTW and 53 lost for Katie Jane. Wow. I'd love to know what you did.

    Hi and welcome!

Try brisk walking instead of running or jogging. It burns off calories really well as long as you keep your heart rate up for at least 20 mins at a time.

Ideal weight for a male in their 50's at 6ft 3in is between 159 and 199lbs.

Keep up the good work and don't give up. It can sometimes be slow but the benefits you will feel are well worth it.
