Depends on how much you have to lose. Someone who needs to lose 300 lbs can lose a lot more quickly than someone who needs to lose just 10.
Off topic, but I've never found the term weight "loss" to be discouraging or de-motivating in any way, shape or form0 -
In my experience, I have quickly dropped 30lbs in about 3 months, but then stopped and kept it off for a year. Now I am back to drop the last 30. I also avoid the word "loss" when I can, words affect our subconscious and loss is something usually regretted, mourned and desired to have again.0

Well, if you figure that 1-2lbs/week is the recommended healthy rate of weight loss, that adds up to 4-8lbs per month.0

I think everyone is different. For me, the first time I started on this journey I lost an average of 0.5lbs per week. It seemed to take FOREVER to get the weight off. There were weeks where I lost 1lb and the next week I'd weigh at the same time with the same previous meals for 24 hours and see a 2lb weight gain, just to see the 0.5lbs come off for the next 3-5 weeks. Then another increase. Sometimes warrented by my food intake, sometimes not.
0.5lbs per week seems to be a good goal. This will allow for you to feel more accomplished if you loose more (hopefully 1-2lbs per week) and not so defeated if you have a gain one week here and there. ~ which will happen, especially if you're a woman.
Just remember to keep a journal so you can see your OVERALL loss and not just focus week to week. :-) Watch sodium too, it'll really impact the weight shown on the scale.0 -
it really depends on how much you have to lose and your body. most resources suggest 1-2 pounds per week is a healthy goal. saying that, for most folks, your body goes through cycles .... sometimes its ready to drop weight in bunches (provided you're doing well with nutrition and exercise) ... sometimes it wants to rebel and hold onto weight (plateaus) so you'll have to switch things up or wait out the plateau.
for me, I dumped 23ish pounds in the first 10 weeks. then I dropped very little for the next month. then I started dropping weight again. then I hit another lull. now I'm back to losing again....at least when I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing (I was not last week).
the key is to find a healthy nutrition plan that you can stick with long term. if you do this, and maintain a caloric deficit, the weight will come off.0 -
It depends on how much you have to lose. When I was a lot heavier I was losing 8-10 pounds/month. Now that I am at the high end of healthy I am lucky to lose 1-2 pounds.0

Some weeks its 2 lbs a week, some weeks its 1/2 lb per week or less.
I strongly recommend you do measurements with tape, not use scale only. One month I lost 1 lb - BUT I also lost 2 inches in my waist, one in my hips, and gained muscle strength and definition, and tone. And I am a smaller size in clothing, then I was when i weighed 10-15 lbs more on scale weight.
Many things can make scale weight 'wrong" - sodium in your diet, non voided food and waste, water retention from hormones, stress, or exercise increase. All of these can really discourage you, and cause weight to fluctuate 1-5 lbs in one day. But they are not true indicators of real body weight tissue changes.
Measuring with a tape measure will give a much more accurate overall picture.0 -
My goal is 2lbs a week but any loss is celebrated0

Thanks everyone. I did measure when I started 30 DS and will take official measurements after. I agree that focusing on inches is more important than pounds; I just wanna see those numbers come down! I probably could be restricting my food intake more but I really like the way I'm eating right now and I am releasing weight (very) slowly but surely. I net between 1200-1350 although I actually consume somewhere around 1700-2000 and exercise about 400-500 calories off almost every day. I believe that in keeping this up I will reach my goals; just gotta be patient with the process.0
