Be a Rose...not a carnation

I wrote this in my blog the other day but thought maybe it would be inspiring to someone on the message boards...

I don't remember what the name of these roses are, but they're my absolute favorite, and they're not a very typical type. They are yellow, but have dark pink, almost red, around the edges of all of the pedals. I mentioned one day how much I loved them when my boyfriend and I were at a store. I guess he sacked it away in his memory and busted it out a few days ago when he brought me two of the roses, surrounded in carnations and daisies.

Ordinarily I don't like carnations, and daisies are ok, but the symbolic gesture really blew me away. He said the 2 roses were us, and the other flowers were the rest of the world. Here we are, these two roses, very much alike but so different from anyone else that the only way we seem to fit is together.

Being healthy is the best motivation for diet and exercise--conforming to societal standards is not. Self-improvement is healthy--not emulating other people or changing to suit them.

Of course I'm still breaking my back at the gym on a daily basis as I work toward the "new me", but it helps to know that I'm not changing for him or anyone else, just me. At the end of the day, whether its been good or bad, I remind myself that the people who love me will always see me as a yellow rose with pink edges, and that is so much more to me than fitting in with a sea of carnations and daisies.
