I'm not sure how close ground zero is to this hotel but I always love staying in the W hotel in Times Square.0

OOOOOOO...no u DIDN"T! LOL. u can google 'boutique hotels' down in Soho or the downtown NYC area. Or I know the Hilton is also downtown. Quite a few nice ones down that way ;-)0

Gansevoort is supposed to be superb. I've only been to their lounge though, not stayed there. Awesome view and great people, more upscale *foofy*.0

if its your first trip to nyc, i would stay in midtown. u could see the sites in midtown and take the train to ground zero0

It depends on your budget.
There are literally dozens of new hotels opening up every year. Many hotels have very tiny rooms so if that matters to you, be careful.
I don't recommend staying downtown because there is very little activity there on nights and weekends(much more lately though).
If you can afford the Marriott Marquis or other large midtown hotel like the Hilton or W, then I would stay there.
No matter what your budget, DO NOT STAY AT THE HOTEL CARTER on 42nd Street.

Don't stay by ground zero
Depends on your budget but look at le Parker meridian by central park or Hilton 54th
Or consider TriBeCa and soho hotels like trump, smyth, thompson hotel
Gramercy park hotel is very cute too0
