Are you trying to get "skinny" or "Fit"

In this context "skinny" is losing weight to reach a desired number on a scale.

Fit is healthy body composition with associated stamina, endurance and strength to engage in activities such rock climbing, kayaking, trail rides on horseback and the associated work with that, mountain biking, backpacking, and other athletic endeavors.

I am working on getting Fit. What about others of you..

Fit, I want to look muscular and "unwomanly" as so many lovely people put it whenever a picture of a chick with definition arises :p

Fit- I figured if I am really fit I will be thin too, but I don't want to be just skinny.

Fit and healthy is my goal.

Skinny would not be a good look for me. Some folks can carry if off, but only a very few. I always think lean and trim are much better terms to aim for than skinny which has really negative vibe imho.

I'd much rather be fit and technically overweight than unhealthily thin. Of course, being lean and trim would be fab too, but possibly would require a lot more time and dedication in the gym than I am prepared at the moment to commit to, but never say never

Fit is definitely more important to me. I semi-retire in January, (I go to a 20 hour week).
I intend for my retirement to include lots of healthy activities, including some new things that I didn't have time for before, like camping and hiking. I want to try yoga and get back into Jazzercise, (the folks there were the most friendly).
Not that I wouldn't mind being able to rock a LBD in my sixties, but it would be a side benefit not a goal for me.
  • Well, as you defined skinny, I'm trying to get skinny. True 'nough. I am overweight and the current number shown on the scale for me is very unhealthy, so I'm trying to rid myself of excess fat.

After spending most of my life other than a few years being "skinny"
My goal is to be thin AND fit.
I'm a couple pounds heavier than I'd like right now, but I'm in much better shape.

Fit by your measure. I don't care one way or another about my overall weight. I'm much more concerned about my BF%.

I prefer the word "slim" to "skinny".

I have always been very fit and still am even now, but as I gain weight, I am struggling to keep up with myself. So maybe once I am "slimmer", I will get back to my old fitness levels.

this. Being fit would be great but hell I'm a teenage girl, I wanna look good and fit into slutty clothes, not spend my weekends running marathons! I'd like to be curvy but still slim and toned, like catherine zita jones in chicago :L

The reason I bring this up is I know people who get fixated on a number on a scale or a look that some other person has and forget the big picture.

I work with skinny/slim/petitie/unfat/nonfat/whatever-you-want-to-call-it people that have a low number on a scale and or next to useless when it comes time to do the physical aspect of the job or any other strenuous activity. And they are good with that, which blows my mind.

Mark Twight, trainer for the actors from 300, has said“appearance is a conseqsence of fitness.”, not that I am advocating everyone should be muscular. However, functionally fit would be a far cry better than "skinny/fat" and look better.

Bottom line is if you are fit, you will look good and be healthy.
