Soo on December 1, 2011 I am scheduled to get braces FINALLY!!! One of my Gf's told me I would probably be in so much pain that I wouldn't be able to eat all of the stuff that I am used to due to the difficulty that comes along with having braces..
I know I will have a heck of a time with bread ( one of my worst enemies), Candies and sugary treats.. sooo hopefully the pain of having braces and getting a prettier smile will all be worth it..
Anyone out there have braces and loose weight due to restrictions?

That might be a nice little kick, for sure. Just know that you will adapt to them relatively quickly so learn to rely on your willpower. Yay for braces!0

I had braces as an adult and sorry, but it didn't help with weight loss. I did stop biting my nails though.0

I had braces when i was like 13 to 14 and i was never in pain? The first 2-3 days may be uncomfortable but then after that you wont notice it as much. It will seem really different but its when they end up coming off your teeth will feel so weird lol
I wouldn't rely on the fact that braces may help stop making you eat food - you have to have willpower not just be warned off by the pain! Also braces dont last forever...
I was really chubby when i had my braces so im sure it never stopped me lol.0 -
When I had them I was told not to eat certain foods to prevent damage to the braces. I forgot what foods they were but I do remember not being able to eat chips which royally sucked when you're fifteen years old. You're in pain for the first few days but afterwards you get use to it. The only days I dreaded were the times I had to get them tightened!!! My mom use to treat me to these gigantic meals at the King before the appointments, and then it was soup and soggy bread for the next few days :sad:0

Ooh don't know how that double posted...0

I had braces in my early 20's (yeah, what a great idea ) and I have to say, it did help, but probably not in a healthy way.
The first few days after a tightening I was a miserable mess. Anything crispy didn't stand a chance- salads were a nightmare. I definitely ate less for those few days a month and while I ate less candy and chips, I also ate less fresh veggies and fruits.
However, I think what actually helped me the most was when I had the elastics on my braces. Eating involved unhooking them (and they were sometimes a pain to hook on in the first place) so everytime I went to put something in my mouth, I had to think- do I *really* want to go through the trouble of rehooking these for an impulse snack? The answer was usually "no". Giving myself even that extra second to think about what I was about to eat really did help.
Good luck to you and wishing you easy tightenings0 -
I've had braces... the pain doesn't last and you will go back to your eating habbits. so be aware of that!
Good luck with getting them on, the first week will suck but after that it gets better! mortin is your friend!0 -
I think I will be going through a lot the first two weeks, I have to get 3 wisdom teeth surgically removed, then I have to get 4 teeth pulled all at once on November 15th. It's going to take a lot out of me.. but I think it will all be worth it.. I don't plan of getting skinny or anything from just having on my braces.. I just think it will help me with a little more self-control than I would if I were in fact without braces.0

hey, not long to go before you get your braces......how did the extraction go?
i am planning to get braces soon. went to see the orthodontist for a consultation last weekend and i am currently awaiting his treatment plan which he promised to send to me within 2 weeks. i was thinking of starting treatment in december but he recommended i start in january instead so i can at least enjoy my christmas without any pain. luckily i dont have to get any extractions :-)0 -
It helped me along with getting my wisdom teeth took out.
I just got my braces off this past August....such a relief.
GOOD LUCK!0 -

how painful was it after first getting your braces and each tightening? is it just slight discomfort or is it abit unbearable? how long did you have to have yours on? i was told my treatment would take about 18 months and the intention is to put the bottom arch on first and and the top about 2 mos later.0 -

The extractions part was a big pain! My mouth still hurts and I have been getting headaches due to them putting in spacers. (My teeth are moving) I get the braces put on this Thursday and its supposed to be a 2 hour appointment. Your lucky that you don't have to get any extractions done. I was quite lucky with all of mine because I didn't get dry socket or any infection. I also lost a few lbs too.. (which was nice)0 -
good luck with your appointment on thursday....please keep me updated on the process and how you feel after. i am still awaiting my treatment plan from the orthodontist so unsure at this stage when exactly i will get them fitted. it will either be end december or early january i think. at the sonsultation the orthodontist did say he would fit the lower arch first and the upper arch about 2 mos later. presume you will be doing both arches at once?0

They're doing to bonding and brackets for both top and bottom on Thursday. I'll get it all over with at once. I don't know if thats a good thing or a bad thing. More than likely I will be in a lot of pain but I have been given the tip to take Tylenol prior to every tightening because you will leave with a headache!0 -
i am sure you will be fine :-). am also interested to know if it will affect your speech after so pls keep me updated after the event :-)0
