Help! On crutches with a broken foot.

Other than getting credit for "walking with crutches," which wears me out and leaves me panting and with sore arms, I have no outlet to exercise. I'm watching my calories and logging in every morsel of food, but getting discouraged - I have to sit most of the time and elevate my foot. Any suggestions on how to burn a few extra calories?

Try looking up exercises you can do at a desk at an office job. You should be able to work your core just sitting there by keeping it tight and letting up then tightening again. Hopefully you do not have to be on crutches too long. If nothing else lower your calories a bit and try to drink lots of water. You could also try some arm exercises with weights or cans of veggies.0

I had to do the same thing a few months ago after surgery. This is the time to get creative and work on strength training.
I started to do seated press, floor press, kettlebell swings, ring rows, pushups, situps, waiter holds and wallballs. If you have access to a rower, you can do the rower also (I was able to either put one foot in or just went didn't use the foot straps at all). Anything from a seated or floor position is duable. Good luck!0 -
Can you put any weight on it at all? There's a guy at my gym right now who is in a full leg cast, but he's able to balance without his crutches. He shadowboxes for his cardio and let me tell you, that guy is soaked in sweat when he's done! It's really mostly upper-body movement. I also do this when I'm at home and not at my gym, but incorporate small leg movements as well and I can attest that it's a great cardio workout. I'm sure it's just as great without the legs!0

no too sure but you can just watch what you eat, dont eat junk even if its within your calorie range. i would say do some upper body part exercises (strength training).0 -
Honestly? Other than maybe strength training for your upper body, I would take it easy and allow yourself time to heal.0

Well to be fair you should be resting and taking things easy to allow your body to repair the damage. However I can understand your frustration. I'm a kickboxer and when I was injured I hated sitting doing nothing, so used to adapt my training to avoid whatever area was damaged, as its your foot, you can't put weight on it or your going to do more damage in the long run...... change things up and do upper body workouts, chin ups, chest Y's, dumbell rows from seated position etc etc.... its wont burn huge amounts of calories but will still give you some strength workout.0
