okay so i bought a hrm. not an expensive one but not the cheapest(40 dollar one). its a sportline S7.
the thing says i burn 15 cal/min sitting still!!! is that humanly possible!?!?
if not do you know how to fix it since i obviously dont know how to use it?
if so then to calculate calories burned do i take the 15x(min) then subtract tht from the total???
thx in advance

That cannot be right. You would need to eat 21,000 calories every day to maintain weight if you were burning 15 calories/min at rest.
Does your HRM have a chest strap? If not you might just have a hard time getting an accurate read from it. It may not be very helpful advice, but in your shoes I would return it and spend an extra $20 for a Timex Zone Trainer T5H881 ($60 on Amazon.com). I have one and it tells me I burn 60-70 calories per HOUR at rest (much more reasonable).0 -
Your body will burn some calories just sitting still. It is always doing something, making your heart beat, breathing, digesting food, etc. Wether that adds up to 15 calories per minute I don't know. As far as the HRM goes I have a Polar and I love and trust that little thing, but it is the only one I have ever used, so I can't really tell you how to set or adjust yours. I hope you can get it figured out because they really are quite helpful.0

Yea.. Sportlines are crap as it is, plus your not supposed to wear them during rest.. only during exercise. If you want to wear all day, you need a bodybugg/bodymedia fit.
I would personally suggest a Polar over any other brand. Timex tends to give a really inflated calorie burn.0 -
Yeah 15 cal/minute is completely unrealistic. I don't even burn that much working out (of course I'm sure some people might be able to since I'm not able to do super-strenuous stuff just yet). I second the idea of returning it and getting a nicer HRM with good reviews. Some people on this site have found really great deals on their Polars on ebay. I wish I'd looked there before I shelled out for mine at Target.0
