TMJ Good Grief!!

So, for the past week I've had TMJ...Temporomandibular joint disorder/syndrome

Any whoots right now I'm just taking it as that my body wants me to lose weight one way or another. LOL :laugh:

Has anyone else had this before and if so for how long???

I know a few people that have had this,and they had to have surgery! Hope you get better!

I've had it for years. My dentist prescribed muscle relaxers for mine, when it gets too bad. Sometimes massaging your jaw will help. Hope it feels better soon!

I too have had it for about ....ooooh.......maye 10-12 years!

I kinda just put up with it - it only gets real bad when I eat crunchy foods, and can be really painful - worst thing is having while kissing - for from romantic!

I think it makes m choose more soft foods to - but I dont mind that so much!

Mine acted up when I was pregnant for some reason.

A physical therapist told me to hold the tip of my tongue on the roof of my mouth and open it like I am trying to yawn. Weird, but it helps. I would do it in the car haha

I've had it in my jaw since I was young :-(

It has never gone away. Some days when I chew gum are worse than others.

Sleep with warm compresses at night. It should relax it...Don't stress it'll just aggravate it more, I know we can't get rid of stress factors that affect us...Don't worry about others worry for yourself, take each day as it comes, take a breather a deep breath...also try sleeping with a niteguard..and work out more hope that helps....

I dealt with it for about a month this summer. I bought a pack of night splints at Target and used one for a few weeks. It eventually went away. I think mine was very stressed induced, but very miserable.

i was in a car accident when i was 16 and the driver's head hit my face. so, i've had it for 14 years now. dental work is the worst for me. can't eat for days after even just a cleaning. :-(

i'ev suffered with it for about 15 years. don't chew anything you don't have to (ice, gum, etc), take ibuprofen to help with the inflammation, and alternate between icing (to reduce inflammation) and warm compresses (to relax the muscle/ease the pain) several times a day. you should notice an improvement within 2-3 days. good luck! :-)

I've been having a small ear infection that has been causing TMJ pain.
I think it's from running with iPhone earphones.

It bothered me for quite a while. I quit chewing gum and worked with my dentist. Wore a specially made mouth guard to bed for a while (about a year). It made me stop grinding my teeth at night, all the muscles settled down and have not had any problem in years!

I was also in a car accident. That was about 25 years ago, and I have suffered with TMJ ever since. Stress seems to cause mine to flare up. When I'm stressed, I grind my teeth at night and then comes the TMJ pain. Yoga and meditation seem to really help mine. And I also have muscle relaxers to take if it gets really bad.

You'll probably need to see your dentist to be treated for it. My doctor won't do a thing for it.

Identical for me ... except I found that a higher amount of stress also exacerbated the condition

I've had it since my early teen years, it's gotten better with age.When it first started acting up I could barely open my mouth without it popping and any time I yawned it would stick for a moment and I couldn't close my mouth!

My dentist gave me a retainer to wear that was supposed to help, but it was so incredibly painful I couldn't keep it in my mouth for more than 5 minutes without crying, so I stopped wearing it and just kept going like normal. Over time the popping lessened and now it's only a problem when I open my mouth reeeeeally wide, which doesn't usually happen in the course of the day.

I have TMJ too & man oh man can it be painful. My dentist referred me to physical therapy & it has helped so very much! I suffered from headaches & jaw pain almost daily & now it has really decreased. I also sleep w/a night guard. For me it's parly b/c I have an overbite, openbite, dual bite, and so my teeth don't make contact except one spot in the back so too much pressure is put on the joint & it's hard to bite & chew. I'm getting braces in December to take the pressure off my jaw. Hopefully you feel better soon!
