Is an average HR of 151 high for you though and indicative of a lot of exertion? Regardless of speed and distance, if you had to work hard to get your body to cover the ground you are going to have burned more calories than someone else for whom that distance and speed would not cause exertion.
Did it feel like you were working hard?
If your treadmill has a HR sensor in the handle, you might want to try running a couple of minutes (with your HRM) and then going to a walk and checking your HR on the treadmill, see if it agrees with what your HRM says. I expect that your HRM would be a couple of beats higher and more accurate. If it is way off though, perhaps your HRM is pooched. If you did not have good contact (wet enough) on the HRM I would expect you to get lower HR not higher.
@3.5 miles in 30 minutes on a treadmill I burn a bit more than 500 calories. But I weigh considerably more (205) and run pretty regularly. My HR averages about 155 during that exertion level.

That's the thing, this is my first time using an HRM so I have no idea if 151 is high for me lol
I mean... it felt like I was working out hard, definitely. Sweating bullets.0 -
What brand and model is your HRM?
Timex
Typically under "Mode" you can find "Personal Setup". In there you can enter age, sex, height and weight. I'll bet that's why yours is reading high.0 -

It only allows input for weight.0 -
If it only allows input for weight then to be honest...its no better than the machine. It has nothing to do with the sensors being wet enough. That's just so that it will read your heart rate. If they're not wet you'll get a lower reading, not higher as it won't always register your heart rate. Calories burned is just a guess even on the best HRMs but to make that guess worthwhile you need at least:
Height, age, weight, sex and MaxHR. With only weight you don't get much. And to be even more accurate you'll want VO2max. I've had Suunto & Timex HRMs in the past and the only one that would estimate my VO2 was my current Polar. But they all allow for maxHR. Honestly, without MaxHR there's not much point to using an HRM unless you just like seeing what your heart rate is while you work out. You need that number to do HR training.0 -

That settles this question then. Returning it to Amazon and buying something else with my gift card!0 -
Everyone says that once you get an HRM you'll see that you burn less calories than the machines tell you. Well I did H.I.T on the treadmill for 30 minutes and the machine says I burned 200 calories whereas my HRM says I burned 375!!!! Can that be right???? That seems a bit high for just 30 minutes on a treadmill.
Kryston I always burn more on my HRM - Everyone I talk to who does HIIT does MORE calorie burn then the machine states... Their formula gets messed up when you fluctuate the speed or resistance... so Heart Monitors will show a more accurate and in this case a higher calorie burn hon.0
