first on scene

you are the first on the scene of a mild motorcycle wreck. it is not a hugely traveled road, but has occasional traffic. the poor boy/man broke his arm (the bone is sticking out). you don't have a cell phone. you need to pick up your children from school. the boy/man will not leave his bike on the side of the road to ride with you to the school. do you leave him to pick up your kids and call 911 from the school, or do you wait with him until another car with a cell phone come and be late to pick up your kids?
what would you do?
what would you do?

Leave him and go to the school and call, cause I'd probably pass out from the sight of it...0
-
Kick him while hes down and steal his bike.
Does that make me sound insensitive?0 -
Wait with the boy/man until another car came along, my children will be alright because the school will have them wait in the school's office until I am able to pick them up, I could not leave a injured person on the side of the rode alone, I would also try to convince the boy/man that he needs medical attention quickly and by riding in my car he would receive medical attention faster.0
-
I would get him secure and stable and tend to his injuries as best I could with the equipment I carry in my car, and I'd flag down the first passing motorist, use their mobile and get an ambulance to him and to contact my child's school. Only after EMS has loaded him into the ambulance and I've given the information I gathered would I leave the scene. I'd never load the man into my vehicle and attempt to transport. I can better care for him on the side of the ride than with him in the back seat of my car with me driving.0

Legally speaking, leave his *kitten*!0

I would wait with him until someone with a phone arrived, i would be to worried about something else being wrong other than the arm to leave him by himself. My daughters wise enough to know to go to the office if im not there to get her and they would ring her alternate contacts.0

what if the office is closed (you are picking them up from an after-school club)?0 -
I would go get my kids and call from there. What if it takes some time for someone else to come? At least if you go call you know that help will arrive in x number of minutes. You have no guarantee someone is going to come along in the next few minutes. I also would not leave my kids to wait and be scared.0

Try to stop any bleeding with whatever clothing you can tear off of him or yourself, go to the school and use a pay phone to call 911. It's not going to help him by sitting there with him and letting time pass by. You're better off doing what you can to help him out then getting help ASAP.0
-
Provided the school isn't too far away I'd make sure he's not going into shock or in danger of bleeding to death and go call 911 from the school. If the idiot won't leave his bike to go get medical attention what's he going to do when the paramedics get there? It's not like they're going to throw it in the back! Personally though I do like the "kick him while he's down and steal his bike" response.0

Hmmm - I love thought/discussion topics like this!
No way could I leave the person there alone and in pain and without any help.....if it was a kid. BUT if it was a kid, I would tell him he's leaving the bike - no choice. If the school was closer, I'd grab my kids (assuming it wasn't life threatening). If the hospital (or the kid's home where his parents were) was closer, I'd take him there first and be late picking up my kids. The school can't lock them out alone (they are young), so someone would have to wait till I got there (or a listed alternate). If was an adult that wouldn't leave the bike...well then I'd leave him and go get my kids and call for help when I got there. Then, if it wasn't out of my way...I might drive past to see if he was picked up yet.0 -

I'm stealing this answer.what if the office is closed (you are picking them up from an after-school club)?
That wouldn't really factor into it for me. I don't know how all after school programs are run, but with my kid's school, they have my contact info, my husband's, one local friend, and both grandmother's. If they were about to close and couldn't reach me, they would call down the list.0 -
This must be a totally fictional story .. I didn't think there WAS anyone left that didn't have a cell phone. LOL
1st aid teaches you to make sure the casualty is out of danger and stabilized .. 1st and foremost. If you need to get help .. and you have to leave him to get it. You do so.
In a life or death situation ... when CPR is required .. You can stay and do CPR on the casualty until someone comes along to keep blood flowing to the brain. You need to do what you can to preserve life.
If it's not a life or death situation (at the moment) .. and help is no where in site, you may have to leave momentarily to get help because anyone who is severely injured is in compromised jeopardy of going into shock .. which can also be deadly.
If the casualty refuses to leave the scene, in order to be transported to a hospital or where help can reach him .. you can not force him .. If the casualty refuses your medical attention .. you can not force him.
You simply have to prioritize .. life and death comes way before convenience. If kids are at school .. they are in good hands. The school is responsible for them until you get there, therefore they are not placed in equivalent danger.
PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WHY WE SHOULD ALL TAKE A FIRST AID COURSE!
What if this happened to a member of your family? Would you want them to be left on the side of the road alone until Goshknows when? .. perhaps losing consciousness then stumbling off the road way where no one can see him? Not EVERY car will stop at an accident site .. Who's to say the NEXT car would stop .. or the car after that? And if they stop .. will the bother to help?
TRUE STORY AND CASE IN POINT>>>
A car rams into a rock cut late at night, severely injuring the lone driver. The 1st to attend were two men, who frantically rushed to the drivers aid. Although it was dark and hard to see, they could tell this man was in critical condition. Worried for his safety, they pulled him out of the car because the car is now on fire, and will be soon engulfed in flames. They called 911.
THe next to come onto the accident site was a semi truck driver .. which the 2 men flagged down. The trucker stopped, and when one of the two men approached to ask if he had flashlight and fire extinguisher, they were blasted with a "I'm not leaving MY stuff here" ... then the trucker coldly proceeded to drive away.
The 2 men continued to care for the injured man, until the ambulance and the police finally showed up. They couldn't see much because they didn't have a flashlight, but nonetheless, they did what they could to help.
Hours later, that badly injured man died as a result of his injuries, while in the emergency ward.
Now, whether or not, the two had a flashlight or not or had gotten the fire out or not .. didn't to seem make much of a difference. This casualty didn't have much of a chance due to his substantial injuries. But, this is a good example of the 2 kinds of people that will come upon an accident site .. Those that will stay to the end .. and those what will just drive by, and not miss a beat like a life in jeopardy means nothing.
FYI: That injured man was a husband, a son, a brother and a father of two .. not to mention a nephew .. MY nephew.
RIP Colin .. I miss you.0 -
nope it actually happened to me today. i do not have a cell phone.0

Yea .. so what DID you do?0

the school was two blocks away and my kids get in trouble (a written minor and miss recess) if a parent is late for pick-up after an after-school club. three times late and the kids can't participate anymore. so i left to pick them up, called an ambulance from the school and went back to wait with the boy/man until the ambulance arrived. by the time the ambulance arrived, a black suv came upon the scene. i am glad i didn't wait.0

I could never make myself NOT stay. It's totally against my nature.0

Get into trouble? I highly doubt if you were detained due to a traffic accident that ANYONE would be in 'trouble'.
Mind you, considering he was alert and stubbornly insisting that he stay with his bike .. driving 2 blocks to get help, is still better than staying and doing nothing.0 -

i can reliably state that it doesn't matter the reason a parent is late, the child will get a minor and miss recess. two years ago, i was 7 minutes late after receiving a call (it came right as i was leaving to pick up the boys) that my dad was dying. it was my last conversation with him; my dad died while we were on our way up. the boys missed recess when we came back from the funeral. the teacher of this club is not known for her empathy.
leaving to pick up my kids was the right decision for me, but it may not have been right for someone else. i am fine that not everyone feels the same way i do.0 -

Wait an minute .. Explain that to me .. I don't understand what that means .. They miss reccess? As punishment for a parent picking them up late? I hope I am understanding that incorrectly .. How is THAT justifiable? What the heck kinda school system have you got there?0 -

Thank you for the sentiment. Yes, a tragedy indeed.0 -

yes, a child will receive a minor (a written warning) and miss recess if a parent is late picking them up from an after-school club. 4:00 means 4:00, not 4:01. if the parent is late 3 times, the child can no longer come to the club. enough minors (i think 6 but it might be less) and the child will receive a major (similar to in-school suspension).
on one hand, i appreciate the school trying to teach the kids punctuality (through making it important to the kids what the parent does). on the other, it can be frustrating when something genuinely come up and a parent is late that the punishment falls on the kids.0 -
wow, that is pretty full on! i understand they don't want you to be late, and i also understand EVERYONE has some lame excuse for being late when they are late.
Man, don't try and knock the damn schedule!0 -

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read. Who is this person in charge and how have they not been attacked with a baseball bat yet?0 -

I concur! I think we can all agree that there are ridiculously tardy parents who think nothing of being late .. then there are those who put their lives in danger because of the pressure they endure to not be late. They understand and accept their responsibilities, but are sometimes victims of circumstance.
I can only imagine what would transpire in the event that a parent is badly harmed (in a traffic accident for instance) resulting from their rushing to get to school in time .. Even if they only a few minutes late. Have we become so incomprehensibly complacent with safety and peoples lives that it has come to this in schools?
Having said that .. It is still not the end of the world if a mishap happens like being late like this once or twice during the course of a school year. If it happens more frequently, then their is an obvious problem with a parents ability to plan their routine.0 -
Dress him up in a clown costume, then head to the school and call 911 from there0

Legally speaking, leave his *kitten*!
Legally speaking.... most states have a "Good Samaritan" law that protects a do-gooder, who tries to render aid, from being held liable should *kitten* go bad.
Your kids will be safe at school. YOU may be this person's only salvation. You aren't worth the air you breath if you let a person remain injured on the side of the road without trying to improve his situation.
Render first-aid so that the victim is stable. Hopefully in that time another vehicle will have stopped. If not, try to talk him into a ride. I'm sure his pain will override his concern for someone stealing his busted up motorcycle. If he refuses to go, and he is stable, then hit the road, and call 911 the first chance you can.
A perfect reason to always have a cell phone.0 -
my children's school has similar "punishments" for late pick up. It's school, not free daycare, that's how they see it. They need the kids out by a certain time, they figure parents should care more about that their child will miss out on something, rather than mind if the school simply tells them "don't do that again" we don't make the rules, but in my book my kids will always come first. For me, there is no one else to pick up my kiddos, grandparents live out of town, my husband works 2 hours away, any family friends that I'd trust to get them are at their own job at 3 when school gets out.....0
