I just found out today that I received a promotion at work to a full time position. However, the shift is midnight to 8:30am. I want to know how other people work around a similar schedule. Do you exercise before or after work? Is it okay to eat during my shift because currently I try not to eat after 6pm. I go to school online full time also so this is going to be a complete life style change for me and would like any advice I can get.

your body doesnt care what time it is, just eat like its daytime

i think the whole dont eat past 6 thing is a myth, some days i eat till 1 am and still lose weight

When I worked graveyard I used to have a ton of energy when I got off work (not sure if it's cuz it was light out) so I would workout after. Everybody is different though. You will find a schedule that works for you a few weeks after you start the new shift. It's especially hard with school. I don't know how the online works well, but I used to only get like 2-3 hours of sleep 2 nights a week cuz I had school all day T and Th. It was rough, luckily I didn't have kids back then. Good luck and congrats on your promotion

I work ten pm to six am what I do is start my new day at midnight like usual eat breakfast at work on my break go home go to bed wake up around two and eat dinner around seven or eight than have a snack between dinner and breakfast. I usually work out after I eat dinner. It really not so bad once you get used to it
  • I'm in the same boat, except I work a 12 hour 2 week swing shift.

Keep doing what your doing but now 6am is your new 6pm...ecspecialy if you stay up for awhile after work. Thats what I do when im on nights.

    Congratz on the promotion!!!

    Goodluck with vampire scheduale!!!!...lol...

Shift work can be horrible on your body! Don't stress about the eating part though - when you wake up have breakfast - carry on from there as if it were day time. If you finish work at 0830am - pretend you're finishing at 5pm - have dinner around 0930am - then go to bed around 11ish... That's what I do when I have to do the graveyard shift... You will still lose weight! The only problem is your sleeping pattern will be completely ruined! But that's easily fixed with a couple of days off!
  • I read this article (i wish i could remember where its from!) but it said the main reason why you arent suppose to eat after "8pm" or (whatever the time is) has to do with digestion and sleep. The article basically said that the whole reason is beneficial to not eat after a certain time at is so your body isnt digestion food while your sleeping because it will be using the energy from the food you ate instead of whats stored in your body. The general rule from the article was not to eat 2 hours before you go to sleep. There wasnt really a set time. That way while your snoozin' body is crunchin' calories and burning energy from your body stores.

Since you would be working the graveyard shift and not sleeping. i dont see it as a big deal if you ate because it would just be like during the day. :) Just dont eat 2 hours before you go to sleep!

whether or not the article is true or not i have no idea. but i thought it was really interesting because i never knew the reason why "people shouldn't eat after a certain time". but i thought it was pretty cool and kinda made sense. but then again i could be completely wrong :)
