*The Breakfast Ingredient of Champions
*Wish you didn't get so winded when hiking up the stairs? Then start your
day with oats. Or bran. Or anything high in fiber.

It may not give you the lung capacity of Michael Phelps, but it could help
you breathe easier. New research shows that dietary fiber may give lungs a
leg up.

*Breathe Easier*
In a study, people who ate at least 27 grams of fiber per day had better
lung capacity than people who got less than 10 grams. The high-fiber eaters
were also 15 percent less likely to develop chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease, an irreversible lung condition that makes it hard to breathe. Fiber
may protect lungs by reducing tissue-damaging inflammation. The antioxidants
in fiber probably help protect lung cells, too. Are you getting enough
fiber?

*Fiber: Wonder Food?*
What else is fiber good for? Plenty:
*Your waistline.* Want to lose a few before the New Year? Fiber helps fill
you up, so you munch less.
*Your blood pressure.* When your blood pressure creeps up, knock it back
down with extra fiber.
*Your bowels.* It's no secret: Fiber helps keep you regular.

*Benefit:* Eating a high-fiber diet can make your RealAge up to 3.5 years
younger.

Yes, great article! I try to get in at least 25g of fiber a day. Too bad old fashioned oats don't have that much fiber. I love the oroweat double fiber english muffins and mrs bairds double fiber bread. And of course fruits and veggies. Thanks!! :flowerforyou:

Thanks! Another good reason to get my fiber in. I had to laugh the other day I was over by 38g in fiber. If you can OD on fiber I guess I did. But it is really hard to eat all of these whole grains and not go over the 28 it's set at. Guess if you go over on something fiber is a good one.

  • Fiber is GREAT at keeping me full for hours. I eat Nature Valley Double-Fiber bread on my sandwiches, a sprinkle of bran flakes in my oatmeal, and lots of sweet potatoes.

The only down side? :ohwell: Certain body functions become more frequent :ohwell:
