Knee pain - muscle or joint??

I am mid way through level 2 of 30DS and have started to get knee pain. The odd thing is I only get it during the cardio ie high impact parts, and don't feel any pain in the lunges and squats. I have had my form checked several times at the gym and am told there are no problems there.

I have never had knee problems in my life - I am average weight so it can't be an issue of too much weight on joints. The only move in the 30DS I am questioning is the pendulum lunges - wonder if they are the culprit.

Is there any way of determining whether knee pain in general comes from muscle or joint, and if it is the latter, what is the remedy - does glucosamine help or would taking anti-inflammatories ease it off.

you knee is entirely a joint, and connects two parts of you leg. pain is not uncommon as your tendons are being used and strained. the knee is very prone to injury because it supports so much of the human body, heavy or not. over the counter anti-inflammatory pills can help with the swelling and pain. if the problem persists, please see a doctor.

30DS is also killer on my knees, all the dynamic jumping around.....I got knee braces, and ice afterwards now. I'd say it's most likely a stressed tendon or ligament than joint though.....buuuuutttt I'm just a makeup artist  maybe just improvise the moves that give you trouble until is subsides, then try again? or march with really high knees during those parts.....just don't stop moving!

glucosamine/chondroitin helps some people with joint pain. NSAIDS will help joint or muscles because they are pain relievers, but will also help with inflammation in either case.

Jillian's moves are so high impact that if your knees aren't exactly perfectly supported by your muscles, they will hurt. If the problem persists, see your doctor, otherwise I would say the muscles supporting your knee joint just aren't strong enough. I've heard that biking is the best exercise to strengthen your knees.

    Hi
I'm a secretary to a knee consultant. Most of the time in older or heavy people it is wearing away of the cartilage (which leads to bone grinding on bone) which causes pain. You look fairly young - I would imagine it is more a tear inside the knee. If it keeps up or gets worse see your GP who can refer you to a knee specialist.
My boss always recommends high dose glucosamine and chondritin - but I believe it has to be taken for quite a few months before you feel the benefits. - This is generally used by the elderly though. Anti-inflammatories are good though. good luck.

Can you pin point on what part of your knee hurts? If the pain is near the patella which is in the front. Most likely it can be the Patella tendon is inflammed, due to constant impact from the ground when being active. Also known as "Jumper's Knee"
Best way you can tell is pressing just below your knee cap(patella) and if you feel pain. Could easily be Jumpers Knee. I'm ruling out the possibility of a torn meniscus or ACL, since you've mentioned you never had any knee problems. How about knee injuries? Like sprains, twisting, etc?

To the touch it is tender to the left of my left knee ie the outside of the leg in line with knee, and also just about the inside of my left ankle. Right leg is pretty ok.

I recently started a gym programme which includes 10 mins running at 6mph on the treadmill. started that monday did it mon and tue which is when the pain started (tue) so i am wondering if it is THIS and not the 30DS that is the culprit. i have never been a runner, but do a lot of walking. in the interim i will swap the treadmill time for the exercise bike and go see a physio tomorrow. have been putting anti-inflammatory gel on those areas since last night with some improvement.
