Any one noticed a decrease in duration of thier periods with weight loss? I notice since i started seriously working out, my periods have drastically reduced from 5 days to 2 days now, not as heavy as before. I am not underweight, i still weigh 170lbs and have lost only 15lbs since i started. any ideas?

Mine are the same duration but WAY less painful. Only slight discomfort for 1 day, instead of days of agony and diahrea. That might also be related to the birth control I'm on though!

That sounds like a bit much. Mine were 6 or 7 days before losing weight and now usually 5. Are you netting no fewer than 1200 calories/day?

less fat = less estrogen = less periods .. for most women anyways!

I went from 5 days to 1-2 days and asked my doc about it and that is what she told me !

That is quite a drastic change. Mine are just slightly lighter but more painful!
  • Mine have become very short and far apart - as in 2.5 months! Not really complaining ;)

Yep- just as sarah307 said, less fat means less estrogen, which can help regulate your periods. Being obese is actually a risk factor for endometrial cancer because of the increased estrogen. So by losing weight, not only are you having a lighter period, but you're also decreasing your risk for endometrial cancer!
  • This happens to a lot of people (myself included), and as far as I know it's not a problem unless menstruation stops entirely. In fact, it's a definite upside; exercise often leads to shorter and lighter periods, and cuts WAY down on or eliminates cramps for a lot of folks as well. As you're saying that you noticed a change when you started seriously working out, I suspect that's exactly what it is.

You're absolutely right that being underweight or exercising excessively can cause missed periods or no periods at all, but if you're still getting it - just shorter and lighter - I wouldn't sweat it. Double check with a doctor as there are lots of other problems that could cause that sort of thing, but otherwise, just enjoy the added bonus!

When I was skinny and healthy mine only lasted 2-3 days - now that I am fat they last 5-7 days. Am hoping that will go back.
